Did Hank Jr get it right

We Never Know

No Slack
People are saying its the end of times and the Mississippi river is running at record lows.
Interest is up and the stock market is down. We don't get mugged in the country.....
Did Hank Jr get it right?

"The preacher man says it's the end of time
And the Mississippi River, she's a-goin' dry
The interest is up and the stock market's down
And you only get mugged if you go downtown"

It may be that way, who can say for sure?

Great song, though.

I don't think it's the end times so no, I don't think he got it right. He had other reasons for that song than being accurate or right. Also, I live in a slightly dangerous city. But you're safer downtown than in the surrounding area. In Louisville, if you don't want to get mugged, you go downtown... where there's a cop or camera every eighty feet in any direction.

"Climate change isn't real...What's that you say? The Mississippi River is dryin' up? It must be gaaaaawwd!"

All societies go through economic ups and downs. The world didn't end during the great depression, for example.

No, the world didn't end, but it did enter the bloodiest and deadliest war in human history.

Many people are always predicting the "end times".
So far, all have been wrong.
But if ever anyone gets it right, they won't get the
satisfaction of saying "I told you so" to anyone.

Now for an old ode to me fatalist
fundie friends...
They urge repentance using fear,
and say the end moves ever near.
But then they must
their date adjust
to float so that it's never here.

True, but the world survived it. There have been wars throughout the entirety of human civilization, but a lot of religious folk tend to believe that the apocalypse is right around the corner whenever things get tough (or just not go their way).

This is true, although it's only been in recent times that humans actually had the power and the wherewithal to really screw things up if they really wanted to. I guess one could say that industrialism, just by itself, has caused a great deal of ecological damage to the planet. But we also have the nuclear threat to contend with.

*or at least the aesthetic he's going for, ignoring that the most "country" thing his immaculately clean Super Duty has ever hauled is a propane-powered "fire pit" from Home Depot.
