I've always felt it was noble to support the northern alliance and kick the Taliban out of that country...do you think Afghanistan is better off due to American intervention?

Better off is a bit of a stretch. Do you mean aside from the billions of metric tons of rubble and a barely functioning government?

That's what I'm trying to discern...if life is better over there now than it was under the Taliban

They have far more pre-made basements I suppose. No electricity and 1/10th of their people are fertilizer, but easy basements.

It's really hard to say simply because the Taliban are far from exterminated. The cancer could metastasize again.

I think the question begs whether Afghanistan will be any better in 10-20 years from now than what it was before we invaded, and my guess is that it's not likely as no outside power has been able to ultimately change it in the past..

To me the jury is still out. We were attacked by terrorists operating from there so had a right to take them out. The country is still a mess because we blew helping them to go into Iraq. We'll see.

Pretty much this.
If Bush had kept his eye on the terrorist ball we would have made real progress in Afghanistan. But his administration cared more about attacking Iran and getting control of the gulf oil reserves, so Iraq Invasion got the attention.

Wouldn't you guys and gals agree that the northern alliance was fighting a just war for a noble cause?
No. I am very much of the Badshah Khan school of thought on that regard.

It can't possibly be a just war for a noble cause if our side is actually shooting people to kill.

On a more general scale, it is very difficult to tell whether the military presence in Afghanistan was overall better than the alternative. Who knows what could have happened? For all we know, the Taliban would have collapsed under its own weight and we would have that much better a fallout.

Nevertheless, I don't personally think that the intervention was a good thing at all.

It may have discouraged or terminated much of the Taliban, but there is no shortage of radicals that were later spurred into action by what is perceived (quite reasonably, one must add) as an arrogant display of force from a foreign power that does not care for the locals.
