Diet and religion

How much of a factor is your religion on what you eat? If you are a vegetarian, are your reasons religious for being one? What dietary restrictions does your religion have? Do you follow them?

Paganism doesn't have any set out dietary restrictions, however since we hold all creatures in incredibly high reverence, many Pagans are vegetarians. I was brought up vegetarian and so have been one since before I became Pagan, I do think though, had I not already been one, I would have became a one because of my faith.

I don't know of many in Catholicism, but in my daily Buddhist practices, I refrain from any unnecessary harm to living beings including animals. When I am of age, I will refrain from intoxicants like drugs or alcohol entirely.
Before I found Buddhism, I was vegetarian but many of the Buddha's teachings just strengthened those beliefs of mine. And I have never liked the taste of wine when I tried it in 2nd grade for communion. I have never received the holy blood of Christ. If they would make it grape juice, I would.
I believe in health of body and of mind. ALthough my slightly excessive horizontal figure may contradict that. Big bones!

Man is only at peace with himself when he is at peace with all living things.

My diet isnt based on my religion.....my religion (or lack of) is based on my beliefs......my diet being part of it.

I share Doc's beliefs.....it is something that I always believed but didn't always practice as I was brought up a different way. I found myself pulled to my lifestyle on my own....no outside factors.

I went through a phase of being vegetarian (For moral purposes rather than religious ones). Then I started thinking that everything edible on God's Earth was 'alive' at some point, and that made me realize (For me) that I was chasing an impossible dream.:)

My religion has no dietary requirements, hell, it doesn't even have its own agreed scriptures. I have my own personal requirements; I mean, I eat only enough to make me full, I generally avoid alcohol (even in ritual), I'm not a vegetarian as I am an animal, and while I have teeth to tear meat and remain part of the food chain (wherever along it humans are), I will continue to eat meat.
