Q: Why is there hatred between Muslims and Jews and how does Islam want us to treat Jews?

A: It is a sad fact that there has been so much misunderstanding and suspicion between the Jewish and Muslim communities all these years. In fact, there are several common factors that should have served as bases for both communities to have a cordial relationship, though the reality on the ground is unfortunately different.

The most important belief that should bind Muslims and Jews together as brothers and sisters is the faith in the One True God of the universe. Both religions teach the need for establishing the Law of God on earth, so that there will be peace and harmony flourishing everywhere.

All the Jewish prophets, including Moses (peace be on him) are honored and respected by Muslims as prophets of Islam too. Particularly honored is Abraham (peace be upon him) whom the Quran calls an "ummah" or a nation unto himself.

Indeed, both Jews and Arabs are the Children of Abraham; Jews descended from his second son Isaac (peace be on him) and Arabs from the first son Ishmael (peace be on him). To Moses, God Almighty revealed the Torah, as He revealed to Jesus (peace be on him) the Gospel.

Completing the progressive revelation of the Divine Guidance to man, God finally revealed the Quran to the final messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). All these prophets were sent by God and the religion they taught was basically the same religion, namely submission to God (which is the meaning of the word "Islam")...

The Prophet’s Gratitude to Allah

Rendering Gratefulness into Real Life Actions

The entire life of our dearly beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) can be viewed as a manifestation of utmost gratitude. One who observes his character, his sayings, his actions and his entire lifestyle will be obliged to concur that he was a truly grateful servant of his Creator...

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) showed utmost gratitude in his worship to Allah. He would pray a large part of the night throughout the year, and his gratitude would even increase in times of special divine bounty...

Adam & Eve in the Qur'an and the Bible

Q: What is the difference between the Islamic version of the story of creation and the Christian version?

Is there any contradiction between the two versions?

A: There is a lot of common ground shared by the Judeo-Christian tradition and the Islamic tradition with regard to belief and practice. Both the Bible and the Quran tell the story of the creation of the first man, Adam. This story is significant for its universal appeal, as it tells how mankind began its earthly existence...

How Does Islam Give Inner Peace?

Searching for inner peace is not new nor is it a new invention. It is a need pursued by everyone on planet earth. All people from different religious, cultural, social backgrounds are in a continuous search for this feeling of inner peace.

People differ on their definition of inner peace. Some find it in having much wealth; others find it in having a good job, while others find it in traveling the world. The list of definitions does not end here.

But the best definition of inner peace is that it is a state of mind that you do not have a problem with everything around you. You are in state of peace with yourself, your family, your friends, your society, your environment, and the whole world around you.

Muslims believe that this state is achieved when they have a confirmed belief in the existence of the true God who controls this universe and has created it for a purpose. This purpose is to believe and worship Him alone without associating partners with Him; meaning there are no intermediaries between God and us.

Once this belief is confirmed in one’s heart and mind, the state of inner peace starts to be felt by a true believer...

Why is Alcohol Forbidden?

Why would a person want to take something harmful into his body?

Why would a rational human being want to dull his senses and cloud his judgment?

In a world given to drowning its sorrows in alcohol and drugs, helping people to forget the harsh realities of life and allowing them to enjoy a brief moment of happiness brought about by drink, Islam has a total prohibition on alcohol and all intoxicants. They are forbidden to Muslims. For many people, the problems of this world are too much to bear. Having no faith, or not enough faith to sustain them and give them hope, they turn to drinking.

For the devout Muslim, it is sufficient reason to shun alcohol that Almighty Allah forbids it. This, alone, is enough for him to avoid alcohol and all intoxicants. However, Muslims know that Allah cares for us with an infinite care and has given every advice for us to avoid harm and to do good things that will benefit us...

God Works in Mysterious Ways? I Don’t Buy It

Q: ...
God doesn’t make only one religion at the first place, why there had to be a religion at the first place?

Is God that self-centered that he needs people’s prayers and charities just to make him happy, he can have anything he wants, and if people don’t thank him then he will be angry and punishes you for something you didn’t ask for in the first place.

Why do we have to follow a certain religion to live our life?

A: To elaborate more on this issue, let’s consider the following:

1- People cause damage and harm to themselves when they misuse or abuse what God has given them. When someone sits in the wrong way, he get’s back problems. God has not told anyone to become a thief or kill others. On the contrary, God has prohibited all sorts of evil but it is people by their free choice who go the wrong way; so why with the bad guys and not the good ones.

2- We do not understand the wisdom of everything since we are very limited. A child who wants some candy and his mummy says no to him thinks that she does not love him, but in fact he realizes this when he grows up and understands. Sometimes, what we think is bad turns out to be the best if only we can be a little bit patient.

3- God does not become angry when we disobey Him, He shows us how ungrateful we are.

4- People are not stupid to figure out between what is right and what is wrong. Yet, they are blinded by their interests and desires and because of this they need a system in place otherwise, this will be a jungle. Even in the jungle there is a system. Imagine if there is no system in the universe, how life will be. If people neglected their responsibilities because they do not want them due to their greed and no accountability in place; life will be an absolute chaos.

5- It is God that judges between people and none of us can decide where he or she will end up. We do our duty and leave the rest to God Who is more merciful to us than our own mothers...

Is the Reward for Patience Concept Inherently Cruel?

A: Sometimes, trials and tribulations are meant to test our faith in Allah and how much we are committed to His laws in this vast universe. When Muslims are inflicted with harm or encounter hard times, they must put their trust in Allah and work hard to pass these trials, hoping in Allah's reward for those who prove patient in such times.

It is Allah's Wisdom to test human beings with different forms of sufferings and tribulations such as poverty, illness and ugliness. This does not mean that Allah Almighty hates the person afflicted with such trials.

Prophet Job (peace be upon him) suffered a great deal of agony due to abject poverty and illness. He is a good example to the fact that Allah tests His sincere servants. After passing this test successfully, Allah Almighty alleviated Job's suffering and he finally lived in luxury and bliss.

Patience teaches us that we should not complain about the difficulties we face or feel sad about them. We should make du'a all the time and ask Allah to overcome that suffering. Prophet Job used to make lots of du`aa' to Allah to cure his illness.

{And Job (Ayyub), when he cried to his Lord, saying: Harm has afflicted me, and Thou art the most Merciful of the merciful.} (Al-Anbiyaa' 21:83)

What Is the Meaning of Hikmah (Wisdom) in Islam?

Hikmah, which directly translates to wisdom, has several meanings, varying from a type of knowledge, a mode, and an approach to deal therewith. It is a complex term that acquires many levels, from operational, attitudinal, and intrinsic; and many associations, mental, philosophical, religious, and mystical.

Although I will try to sketch and engage with them all, I ultimately deal with the most important and pertaining one. And as you will see, this is related to the very nature of obligations of the highest wisdom which we should embark upon.

Practically speaking, a wise person is someone who is able to make best decisions at the right time and the right place.

Naturally, this is associated with a type of maturity, which is not necessarily a function age. Also, such a possessor of wisdom is thought to have both a better grasp with the bigger picture of things and, most importantly, a faculty apt to make decisions and commitments that are more viable in the long run. So on the operational level, wisdom is associated with not having short-sightedness...

Why Is Usury Prohibited in Islam?

The Quran warned those who get into usury that their life will be void of any blessing, but why is that?

It is definitely due to the many dangers usury has upon economy, society, and individuals. In the coming few lines, I will be touching upon some of these dangers.

Psychological and Moral Dangers

Usury inculcates man with corruption and takes him from the main objective of his existence and makes him a slave of money. It turns him from a human being into a money seeker who is blinded by money and for whom money is the most important thing in life...

Don’t Say I Have a Big Problem—Say I Have a Big God: Al-Kabeer

I was in high school reviewing for exams when I received a text message from my aunt.

The text message read, “When you have a problem, don’t ever say ‘O God, I have a big problem.’ Rather say, ‘HEY problem! I have a big God!’ and everything will be ok.” And what immediately came to mind was, “Allahu akbar“(Allah is greater).
Allah’s Name al-Kabeer (the Most Great) is a Name that we all need to get acquainted with.

Not only do we refer to this attribute everyday, but, when truly understood, it is a Name that brings tranquility and confidence to every person who is overwhelmed.

It is a Name that reminds us of our priorities, of where true greatness lies and who is ultimately in control...
