Discussion: Pride and Arrogance Are A Form of Idolatry

While I have having my precept Bible study this morning, it occured to me that having a prideful heart and being arrogant might be a form of self worship which, in turn, is a form of idolatry.

Do you think that might be a good analogy or not? Keep in mind this is a discussion and not a debate.

Perfect analogy, and one that the Fathers make quite often. It puts oneself before God, and so yes, it is in fact idolatry.

also another way to think of it is that idols are not icons. idols are misrepresentations of what they really are, whereas icons are presentations (better: symbols) of what is beyond them. idols point nowhere, even as they seek to point to themselves. icons point to what gives them life.

so pride and arrogance is idolatry of the self, but what self is it that we make into an idol? what are we proud and arrogant about? if we examine ourselves, we'll find that there is precious little to be proud and arrogant about, since all we have is from others. thus we are proud and arrogant about nothing. the self we build up is a misreprensetation of what we really are (nothing). and so the self is truly an idol. not just because we direct the worship elsewhere from where it truly belongs, but because there is nothing to worship. instead of idolatry, we should cultivate iconography, and become icons of god.
