District 9

Saw "District 9" today. I thought it was exceptionally well done.

If you've seen it, what did you think of it?

Do you think the lead protagonist was a credible character?

Was the movie plausible in describing how humans would treat aliens?

1. Seen it. Loved it.

2. Credible in what way? What makes a movie character "credible"?

3. I do think the movie provides a plausible portrayal of how humans would treat aliens, especially mostly useless aliens.

I've Enjoyed it a lot. As a South African, the movie had a lot humor in that I think a lot of international viewers missed. I think also what made the movie very good is that most of the dialog was improvised on the spot, with only guidelines to go by.

I enjoyed the main character, because that is how a "boer" sounds like if he was brought up in a good Afrikaans home in Pretoria west or more lower income bracket, and working for the Government or para-stateal

On a side note, when I went to watch it I went with friends and we had a long discussion on the weapons used in the movie. Here is some of the interesting facts that made the movie's guns different than Hollywood's versions:

  • Could only be used by aliens.
  • unlike in games the guns were dead accurate.
  • and the "human" explosions looked real even on the "splatter" effect

WARNING!! Entire Post Is Spoiler!! :D

I liked it. :D and I thought it did seem realistic(if aliens came here, people would probably treat them like crap)
I thought it was pretty sad how they were so mean to them. Like the part where they found the big shed full of alien babies, or eggs or whatnot, and they burnt it down. That was really mean, considering that the aliens were not so different from humans at all. I would think that most people would feel bad about killing lots of babies of a species who have their own language and are so much like human people. They weren't just mindless bugs. Killing their babies would have been devastating to them.

And the main character seemed like a real person too.
It wasn't "he's mean to the aliens, and then he's nice and willing to make sacrifice for them just like that." Rather it was "he's mean; he gets nicer; he screws the aliens over; then he accepts his fate and decides to help them even though he'll have to wait three years to get what he wants." I thought he was realistically flawed. He didn't magically become 100% accepting of the aliens immediately, and I thought that was realistic.

I loved it. Best Sifi flick in a long time.

Comical, cliche', condescending, conscience in a coma....yup, a perfectly believable and accurate depiction of a beurocrat

Was the movie plausible in describing how humans would treat aliens?

Disturbingly so (IMO). Watching the attitudes of the talking heads, the man-in-the-street clips, and the behavior of the squads during the filming of the mass eviction gave the movie an eriely realistic documentary feel. If you edited out the aliens and replaced them with a group of humans it would be easy to believe it was the real thing.

I hope I get a chance to see it in the theater again before it's unavailable.

Saw it with my lady a while back. I enjoyed it, but it was WAY too intense for her. I looked over and saw her crying while the kids behind us giggled at the "popcorn" scene.

District 9 was great. Second-best SF movie released this year for me, just behind Watchmen.

I can't believe I missed this thread.

Saw it last night.
I think District 9 was just what the genre needed.
a movie based on actual content and not cheap entertainment and special effects. the movie had a strong social statement. the movie is a projection of the realities and history of za. Delano, one of our South African members and my friend tells me that during the apartheid days, za had a district 6 which was populated by non whites which were evicted by force and the area declared for 'whites only', just like the aliens in the movie were to be removed from district 9 to district 10, and separated from the humans.
the movie was very disturbing and dystopic. it made me psychologically weary, and like I said by far focused more on content and social context than a romantic sci fi story line. this is what true sci fi should be like: relevant to our society and personal psychology.

I was very impressed, although I thought the aliens a bit too human. I liked how the faces moved.

I liked that about it though - it really helped to communicate their feelings and emotions, and allowed you to truly feel a connection with the aliens.

Make them too non-human and I feel you'd lose that connection.
