Do Christians need to overcome sin?

Can sinning with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit be overcome in this life.

Some Christians or churches teach that sinning cannot be overcome in this life. That only a few really bad sins which require many steps or just certain sins can be overcome, thus the 'other' sins by extension are winked at by God or permissivable or allowable since they are impulsive rather than premeditated.

So these Christians allow these sins in their lives and then harden in their veiw that these 'sins' are not really "hard sins" or "iniquity", but just part of being in a sinful world. Is that correct according to scripture? Or does the Bible teach that sinning can be overcome, what do these verse say?

Romans
6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Galatians
5:16 [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

1 Peter
4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of [his] time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

1 jOHN
3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Most Christians are preoccupied with sin and its attributes
Sin is a very negative aspect to concentrate on.

Far better to concentrate on Jesus teachings and trying to live our lives accordingly.

We can do nothing about how God regards sin or even understand the implications.
We are all sinners, like it or not.
Concepts like the Calvinist "Tulip" and Total Depravity are ideas derived by the false logic of original sin and the "Powers and nature" of God.
Such unknowns are too vague to base ones faith on.

Sin is a fact of life for all men not just Christians. It is never overcome.
However it will be forgiven in faith and repentance.

The Holy spirit is with us all, all the time. we do not acquire it in some way, it is ever present and unavoidable.
However both Sin and the power of the Holy Spirit are subject to our "Free will"
The one is the result of our actions or inaction. The other limited by our acceptance.

I fear the application of the quotations you give are wishful thinking and may at most, improve the way we live our lives, but do not remove our ability to sin.

There is as great a tendency today, to reinterpret Jesus teachings, as there was by the writers of your quotations. We still tend to fill gaps in in our knowledge by interpolating from other teachings. This neither makes them certain nor in many cases even likely.

Sin, spiritually speaking, is the product of our having forgotten who we were created to be. As we go about the spiritual work of remembering, we sin less.

Fatalist. Christian. Pacifist.
Repent.. for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.

Flesh makes us the son of Adam and corruptibility.. But, by accepting and being filled with the Holy Spirit, our flesh becomes increasingly subdued - slave to God. And once we are made incorruptible - no longer slaves in the flesh - we are fully sons of God. Fully at peace.
