Usually considered by whom? Are the deities or God that far removed from us, and that "snooty" as to not listen to someone who approaches them with a sincere heart? Where do people come up with crap like this? Is it a ploy to discourage converts? This is the sort of thing that gives the internet a bad name.

Yeah, it must have been someone who thinks he/she can speak for all Hindu sects when it comes to Deva-worship.

It reminds me of one of those dudes Vinayaka (where is Vina by the way?) mentioned who came to his mandir one time and started telling the priests how things should be conducted...and the messed up part was that the dude was only there for one day.

The topic of the OP reminds me of a group in India called Arya Samaj.

They have monopolized Vedic Dharma. It's vile.

Talking to the gods is such a lovely thing to do. A devotee can assume many of the bhavas in his devotion to god. Friend is most certainly one of them. So assuming god to be a friend, one can definitely chat with him/her and pour out the heart's content, if that gives one the feeling of 'connectedness' with god. (I used to write my thoughts in a paper and put it in front of the god picture sometimes).

Some people write down their prayers and throw them into the sacred fire, I don't know why those prayers would reach God any faster than if spoken though. Maybe it's for privacy reasons when many people are praying together.

It reminds me of how in certain religions (not gonna point fingers) one has to go to a priest to consult God, to confess etc. As if God does not hear all.

I agree it i kind of does sound like a group trying to dissuade new converts. One of the things that almost made me not want to be a Hindu was the idea that God was "unapproachable" in Hinduism. You hear that a lot online, which shows they don't understand the concept of God or Gods in Hinduism.

Ganesha is right there. Some other ones are harder to contact. Regarding written prayers, it works. Back in Vedic times, there was no paper, or pen to write it on, so nobody knew of this mystical activity, of the prayer re-appearing in astral; form for the devas to read. How could they know, without paper? So I have seen literally thousands upon thousands or written prayers being burned in a homa fire. As with a lot of other mystical sides of things, the intellectuals will doubt it. for that is the very nature of the intellect... doubt, doubt, and more doubt.
