Do people on RF believe they are more intelligent than everyone else?

Okay, the answer that you're supposed to give to this question is no, right?

Well, the honest answer would seem to be 'yes', according to two polls I left open a while ago.

I'd like to note that the t-score for the unpaired t-test (different sample sizes) was 2.505, yielding a p-value of 0.0201.

This suggests that the idea that RF believes they are more intelligent than everyone else is a statistically significant conclusion (given an alpha of 0.05). Whether this belief is justified is neither here nor there.

Btw, before anyone calls this thread trolling, I'd just like to let you all know I'm not doing anything but stating the facts. You're free to look at the data.

Well of course. This is a forum full of people who think they're right about reality! I mean, can you imagine how smart you would have to be to know what reality is? Pretty genius, if you ask me.

Doesn't everyone believe to be above average, particularly when it comes to intelligence?

Are you seriously suggesting that your two straw polls are scientifically accurate? IF so, why?

I think they are interesting at least.

I would also suggest that the average intelligence of RF is probably higher than that of the general population due to the subject matters prominent on the forum due to the nature of the topics discussed here. Same with if I started a forum on Quantum Physics and took the average intelligence of the membership it would probably be above the average for the general population. There is however a massive difference between a slightly higher intelligence than average and being extremely clever. Almost everyone in my university class probably has an above average IQ but there are only a few who are well above the average.

I'm smarter than myself, which is saying something.

The fact, that you think you can extrapolate, any significant data from the maximum of 10 people, who answered both questions is the most interesting part of this experiment imo.

1) I'd guess the average intelligence on this forum is higher than the average intelligence in real life because the subject matter on here would tend to mean that someone who wants to discuss it would be a bit more intelligent.

2) The only reason you're supposed to say "no" to the question "Do you think you're more intelligent than most people?" is modesty. If you're asking for an honest answer from most people, you'd probably get a lot of yeses.

Also on the question about how "intelligent are people around you," I wasn't sure what it meant. If it meant RF I'd have given an 8.

I gave it a 3 because I was including "people around me" in general, and I happen to live in Kansas real close to the Missouri border. It's an intellectual vacuum outside of my college town.

Well first off, "intelligence" is relative. For example a lot of people would consider a Physics professor to be quite intelligent, but if you were lost in the Congo and you had a choice of having either a Physics professor or The Crocodile Hunter helping you to get through the treacherous jungle and back to safety, most people (if not all) would pick The Crocodile Hunter as the Physics professor's "smarts" is virtually rendered useless overall in this scenario.

As for whether people on RF is more intelligent than "everyone else" I don't think there is a way to really measure or gauge that...although, this is a place geared towards "thinkers" and robust and intelligent debates; critical thinking, researching your subject matter, and learning are constantly encouraged so there may be a higher concentration of these type of people here than most other places. :)

To read our posts, it seems we're all geniuses with God speaking inerrant truth directly into our ears.
Alas, this God fellow has a wicked sense of humor, & tells each of us something different.

And, for the record, I'm not more intelligent than everyone else. I'm only more intelligent than about 99% of everyone else.

Is this peculiar to RF, though?

You know what they say: if you ask people to rate their driving ability, most people will call themselves "above average"... but based on what I see on the roads, a good proportion of them are wrong.
