Do you have faith in mankind?

If we can't we won't be around much longer; we are approaching the limits of the closed system we call planet Earth. Once we exceed those, if we haven't gotten our act together, we die, or most of us do, anyway.

I am Buddhist, and Buddhists believe that yes we can ultimately resolve our current problems. Of course this always leads to a new set of problems, now doesn't it?

I tend to see us as an especially gifted species of chimpanzee. It seems highly likely to me that we have gotten ourselves into a mess from which our species will not survive, or will survive but only in a reduced state. But to some extent I have faith that with so many of us, some of us will come up with solutions to the problems we face. That is, it does not take one sweeping solution to solve the world's problems. The world's problems can be solved by many small solutions that mount up. And if enough people put their minds and backs to it, then I think there will be enough solutions to the world's problems that we might just make it through the messes we've created.

God created within us the capacity to do much good, but because He gave us free-will, some people choose not to do so.:( I do have faith, and I think mankind has been making progress.

Back in the 1950's, many people assumed that there would be a nuclear war that would wipe out much of the human race before the year 2000. Certainly there have been some bumps along the road to world-wide, but we avoided mutual destruction. If that isn't cause for hope, then I don't know what could be.:)

This takes me back to a thread (one which I have forgotten) - in which I talked of like minded people being powerless as individuals though there are many of them. I know what I mean anyway!:)

Man is likely to survive.
large numbers will die, civilisation will collapse.
The remaining numbers must learn to live with out technology.
Still more will perish.
Those few who survive will have learned to live in the new world.
Technology may not emerge again, as the easy access to raw materials has now been exhausted.
New man will be a survivor and will have to express him self in other ways.
such as The world of religion, art, music. poetry. crafts.agriculture.
The world could be a better place.
Or it could be SAVAGE.

Sometimes I have faith so stong I feel like nothing can break it. Other times I feel like mankind is spiralling downwards and fast and needs to be strictly controlled and regulated. This changes on a daily basis.

At the moment I have immense faith in mankind.

No. Absolutely not. No faith in individual people and especially not people in a group.
If it isn't too personal a question, why is that, Snowbear? I am curious as to whether you feel the same way as I do, sometimes, for the same reasons.

I feel like for now we can solve our problems but most likely won't but in the future no amount of planning, conserving or environmentalist movements will make the finite resources in the universe become infinite which is what is needed if the human race or any race to keep on living

There are so many things that need to be agreed upon and reconciled over....Not that that makes it impossible.

Would world harmony really be everything its cracked up to be, though? I mean, war is positively terrible, and I would do anything to do away with that forever, but what about other, smaller conflcits? Would life still be as interesting if everyone just agreed with everyone else and lived in harmony all the time? Doesn't a little offense add some spice and passion to life?

It is very possible that all of mankind can unite. But it is very unlikly, do to very diverse cultures.

If you mean feel the same way you do as stated in your previous post, then no, as my faith in people is never so strong that I feel nothing can break it.

I have had very few truly close friends in my lifetime. Those few I have allowed close.... who I have allowed myself to trust implicitly, have always eventually betrayed that trust.

I have learned that with people, things like love and friendship are never truly unconditional. Peoples' selfish nature (yes, including my own ~ I'm not sinless in this regard any more than anyone else is) will eventually prevail.

For things like the better good of society, coming together to work things out and have peace for all mankind... I strongly believe that people are way too selfish to truly work out all their differences and live together peacefully. When you get many people together who believe strongly that their way is the best and that all others who think or believe differently must be killed or otherwise driven from their homes, it is extremely difficult to change their thinking to come up with a way to live peacefully with those they hate. It happens between neighbors, within communities, cities, couties, states/provinces, countries and of course, worldwide. If even neighbors cannot live side-by-side in peace, how could I have faith that people of different countries with different ideals who mutually hate each other could come together for peace.... times 10,000??

Ok, Fluffy.... your turn ;)
