Do you have free will or not?

Here's a question to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Do you believe you have a free will or do you believe that your life is already predestined?

Also further on that question, do you believe God already knows the outcome of your choices.

I believe in both, free will and previously decided destiny. And yes, I believe God already knows everything, including the outcome of my choices.

Yes, I have free will... to a point. For example; I can't fly like a bird, even if so choose.

I believe G-d knows all possible outcomes of all possible choices, as I have chosen them in some multiverse or other.
G-d might have a very good idea what choice I make based on this, but that does not make it predestined.

This makes no sense, you're either free to choose or your life is predestined. If your life is predestined then your choice is not yours to make since it already been programmed for you.

This seems more reasonable, in other words God has an idea but does not know.

I myself don't believe in any of this stuff but I had an interesting debate with two coworkers (One Christian and the other was Muslim), they believed that they had free will but that God knew the outcome of their choices, which makes no sense.

Indeed, it's the whole point of this physical, imperfect world and the creatures in it. G-d being perfect can't become imperfection.

It's the grand experiment; to make that which is independent of G-d.

If G-d wanted predestined robots, he would have stopped with the angels, who (in Judaism) have no free will.

I respectfully disagree. Destiny and choice on a hand, and will on the other, are different things. We do want things but sometimes they don't happen. If I know the outcome, I'd complain about the argument of free will, but I don't know it. No one knows the outcome for certain.

These are just my views and opinion. No pressure :)

You don't know the outcome, but according to you God does. Which means that your choices in life are already set and there's really nothing you can do about it, this is not free will, it's pre-destiny.

Is this good or bad?

It's not about good or bad, it's simply an illogical opinion, that's all.

Though I should say that if your life is predestined and we're talking about heaven and hell, looks like God has already chosen who goes to heaven and who goes to hell without even giving the people a choice in that matter.

When we make a choice, tend to it, but the outcome comes different. Can we say it is not destined? Our choice did not happen, does it help complaining about it?

If we don't know who goes to heaven or hell, why would anything matter?

God told use what sends to heaven or hell and promised He would be fair in granting them according to what we do.

No one is complaining, I'm simply saying that you're either free to choose in life or you believe your life is already predestined by a higher power and you're simply just a piece of the program he created that's operating on the code logic he implemented. Whether the desired outcome of that choice happens or not is irrelevant because the message that I'm getting here that God knows all that's going to happen, therefore it's destined and you really have no choice.

It does not matter, this is not about knowing, it's about whether your choices are already set by God or you make them yourself.

So if I have 6 kids and I had decided that all my will will go to the 3 older ones, does that make me a fair father?

I'm not saying someone is complaining. Complaining is a possibility and I'm asking if it would make a difference against what already happened. Again, a choice is not an outcome. The outcome is fixed but the choice is not. You asked if we have a choice and I said yes. We can work on having a specific outcomes, yet we can never always make them happen 100% for certain. If outcomes were not destined, we could always control what it will be.

It does not matter, this is not about knowing, it's about whether your choices are already set by God or you make them yourself.
I believe that yes, it matters. I'm not saying this as a stand alone remark, I said it with the explanation in the next line that got separated in the separate quote below.

So if I have 6 kids and I had decided that all my will will go to the 3 older ones, does that make me a fair father?
Nope, it does not. Would you do that even knowing the other 3 unfortunate kids deserve being part of it?
And by the way, God already ordered to give the will to all the kids; the 6 kids in your case.
This destiny thing is not just a whim God makes. He gave clues on what outcomes would be and promised He would be fair in them. A person that deserves going to heaven is promised that their destiny would be going to heaven, not hell.

Pardon me, are you Abrahamic?

Some examples from Holy Quran
The way has been told, the choice is of people, consequences will follow
[91:8] And by the soul and its perfection —
[91:9] And He revealed to it what is wrong for it and what is right for it —
[91:10] He indeed truly prospers who purifies it,
[91:11] And he who corrupts it is ruined.

[2:257] There should be no compulsion in religion. Surely, right has become distinct from wrong; so whosoever refuses to be led by those who transgress, and believes in Allah, has surely grasped a strong handle which knows no breaking. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

There are written decrees
[52:22] Allah has decreed: ‘Most surely I will prevail, I and My Messengers.’ Verily, Allah is Powerful, Mighty.
[6:97] He causes the break of day; and He made the night for rest and the sun and the moon for reckoning time. That is the decree of the Mighty, the Wise.

So let me simplify, today you have a choice between wearing a red shirt or a blue shirt, this is clearly a choice that you need to make, say you decided to wear the red shirt, does God know you were going to make that choice? If the answer is yes, then you have no free will and your choices are not yours to make because God already programmed that for you to make, but if the answer is God would not know which choice you will make, then free will can work here.,

Ok, but what is this promise based on? Surely can't be deeds if God already decided what deeds child A or B will be committing. So clearly based on your idea if God knows all future and what choices you're going to make, the decision has already been made and whether you fit into that heaven category is you and your luck (Since you don't know, but he knows).

Pardon me, are you Abrahamic?

I was born a Christian but I consider myself an agnostic because religion in this day and age is an outdated idea. I don't mind celebrating Christian holidays with family but as far as belief goes? Religion does not fit in today's world in that regard.

Man does have free will and with that independence bears a responsibility to act to relieve the suffering of others.
God sent His Messengers and Prophets to guide us in the right direction so we have guidance to make decisions that can uplift humanity.

do you really think God has nothing better to do than decide in advance every single action that will be made by every single person on earth? why would He give commandments to live by if you do not have any choice in what you do?

That's a good argument, I'm not saying no. The choices we make are made with full consent from our side, don't they? An out come will happen, including not succeeding in getting it (considered an outcome too). God knows that outcome. A choice is a though, a state of mind, not a realized fact until the conclusion happens. Okay, we are programmed, but consent is there, therefore choice. When it comes to choice, consent is what matters. I'm saying it is both, choice and destiny, not as 100% weight on each side of the scale, but as two factors working together at the same time. We can decide to go fishing any time, but things on the way could happen like an accident or an explosion that render our choice useless, and that's destiny.

Ok, but what is this promise based on? Surely can't be deeds if God already decided what deeds child A or B will be committing. I believe that does not matter as long as we live our lives with consent in the choices. If God destined what goes along with our consensual deeds, then it does not matter to us Abrahamics. With your argument, people would lose their minds if the outcome goes against their deeds and choices. Life would be unbearable.

Thank you for answering, and I welcome you anytime. This section is a DIR and your posts could be against the rules considered an agnostic. I thought you already knew that, but seeing the discussion gong on, I expected you're not fully aware of it. The extent of this thread should be that I do believe God knows everything and you don't believe so, ending with shaking hands. Please read Rule 10 here: http://www.religiousforums.com/link-forums/forum-rules.346/ The typical behavior in DIR is asking, getting an answer and enrich your knowledge about what belief the DIR stands for without debating it.
