I haven’t had a land line in my home since 2001, so I’m 22 years without one.

Do you have a land line in your home?

If not, when did you ditch it?

If so, why do you have one?

I had a land line for faxes while I was in business, but ultimately got rid of it when I was able to start sending and receiving faxes digitally on my computer. I have had no use for one since.

I understand why businesses have them, but I struggle to understand why private residences still have them.

My Internet comes with a landline

I asked if I could have the Internet connection minus the landline and they said no

But I never use it and don't even know the number and the phone I use doesn't work, if someone calls it then it rings but the handset doesn't work so I can't talk to anyone on it

I have Verizon and for awhile there was no cost benefit to dropping the land line. About 5 years ago I was able to save 40 dollars a month dropping it and I did. You might want to check back every few years to see if they change there policy.

Is that through your mobile plan?

Cable and internet are included (along with all utilities) where I live. I don’t use the cable; only the internet. No idea if a land line is included, but I have no interest anyway.

Last time I had a land line, I never gave out the number, but aside from faxes, the phone would ring several times per day.

I've used the same landline in my SOHO for decades. I guess I could do without it and not notice, but what I have ain't broke so I won't fix it.

There were three votes for “yes” several minutes ago. It would appear someone disconnected their land line since I started this thread…

I had one until a few months ago as it came with the internet package I had. When I moved flat, I got a different package with no landline.

I honestly don't miss the cold calls but that comes at the cost of being slightly more paranoid about losing my mobile.

I have two. One is for the burglar alarm to report if it is activated. The other is for voice. Some members of my family used it out of habit, notably my ancient father who died last year. I've kept it as mobile reception in some parts of my house, especially downstairs, is rather poor and it's good in case my mobile goes on the blink or gets lost or nicked or something. But BT, the landline provider, is I understand intending to discontinue land lines, some time in the next few years. So it may only be a matter of time before it goes. That will mean getting some extra box, no doubt at great cost, for the alarm.

I like it because I lose a lot of things. That's part of my job... to keep Boss happy thinking she's smarter than me, finding my lost things.
But the real reason is I see far too many people stuck (attached in more ways then one) to their cell phones. I have fingernails and they work fine as a dead attachment to my fingers. We have signs all over our temple that say 'no phone use' but it's amazing how many times we have to ask people to go outside or downstairs if they want to chat with a friend. I also notice how people seem to bump into each other at malls, or chat it up at sporting events. They're missing out on a lot of the conscious mind joys when that phone keeps buzzing. If I go for a walk in nature, I want to enjoy every minute of it, not get derailed by some unnecessary phone call. This morning, due to observational skills, we noticed a saw-whet owl. What a cool little creature .. a 4 inch owl. Now Boss does have a cell phone, mostly for when we travel, of if she goes out and might need to call me in an emergency.
