Do you think that Catholic priests should be allowed to get married?

No harm.
After all Jesus never put such restrictions on the priests.
It was Paul and Church who did it.
I think it is one reason that the Church priests so often get involved in sexual abuse and we read it in the news.
Jesus being from the off-spring of Abraham would be happy if the priests get married.

Regards
Did Jesus even institute priests?

I think that the vows of poverty and obedience are inherent to Christianity. Chastity is not.

All diocesan priests must take a vow of chastity but non are required to take a vow of poverty. It would be more correct to say that chastity, not poverty, is inherent in the priesthood.

Dearest, Christianity is about economy, it isn't about sex.
Maybe Puritanism (private vices and public virtues) is about sex.

But Christ told us to create social justice and economic equality. Christ despised the rich and comforted the poor.
He never said anything about sex

It's the story of The Thorn Birds which will repeat itself again and again

why about avoiding this unnecessary suffering?

Its interesting what the bible says about this (it doesnt say a lot, but this warning is interesting)

1Tim 4:1 However, the inspired word clearly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired statements and teachings of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, whose conscience is seared as with a branding iron. 3 They forbid marriage and command people to abstain from foods that God created to be partaken of with thanksgiving by those who have faith and accurately know the truth.

if any religion is 'forbidding' marriage to any of its followers, i think it is a warning sign that it is not 'following the faith' of Christ.

Celibacy or marriage should not be imposed from outside either in the name of God or religion or discipline. It should be a personal choice a person makes. Celibacy can be positive and also negative. It can become positive if it makes one to ask fundamental questions of life. It can be negative if it is imposed. The essence of celibacy is to live in the present. It is freedom from the past(parents either physical or religious ) and freedom from the future(children). It is living a creative life rather than living a mechanical life. It is manifesting eternity in the present. It is a life of freedom from one's desires and transforming one's desires into God's desires. In Bhagavat Gita it is called Niskama karma, actions done with out expecting any results. Jesus Christ said that 'the actions I do are not my own but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Celibacy is more of an inner attitude. It is freedom from all false identifications and identification with the eternal.
Once there was a competition. A bow was there which needed to be lifted. All the gods and sages were invited. Krishna was also there. The organizer announced that only a celibate could lift that bow. All the ascetics who were living the life of celibacy could not come forward as they doubted their state. Krishna came forward and lifted the bow. All were in great surprise. Krishna with so many wives, a celibate? It is not the external celibacy that makes a person celibate it is an inner attitude, inner life. Following physical celibacy for a certain period of one's life, as a seeker of Truth, can help one to understand the real meaning of celibacy, which is not external but internal. In Hinduism it is called Brahmacharya, waking with Brahman or God. Taking a life of celibacy without profound God experience can be a burden to one's life. Mary is called virgin Mary. Jesus Christ is born of a virgin mother. Spiritually a virgin is one who says' my children are not my children but God's children'. She always remains a virgin, giving birth to physical children does not take away her virginity. She gives birth to God, eternity or incarnation. She was an eternal virgin. Virginity or celibacy is not just an external act but it is inner state or attitude. God is an eternal celibate. He or she creates this universe and becomes a mother or father but he or she does not lose his or her virginity. God is a virgin mother or virgin father. We, human beings, created in the image and likeness of God, should imitate God.

Yes, I think they should be allowed to get married. Not because I think celibacy is a bad thing, but that it should be optional. I don't see the problem with local parish priests having a wife who lives with them.

Precisely. I deeply believe that chastity can become a sin, if you fall in love and you reject the chance to be happy with this person.

Neither do I, but if we re-wrote the rules of the Catholic Church based on what I don't have a problem with, there wouldn't be much of the Catholic Church left at all.
