As I understand it the "common cold" is not a specific disease

It is an umbrella term that covers a great many diseases

That's my understanding anyway, maybe I am wrong?

"Doc, have you got anything for this cold?"
Doc replies "well, the common cold usually last about 7 days but there is this new tablet, 3 times a day costs $80 and your cold will be gone in a week"

You’re quite right. In fact, many of them are variants of our current acquaintance, the Corona Virus. o_O

I don't know if they'll ever come up with any kind of real cure or vaccine, although I would be happy if someone could invent an effective medicine for dealing with symptoms like cough, sore throat, congestion, etc.

The various cold remedies out there on the market tend to produce lackluster results, at best. A few might soften the symptoms a tiny bit, but that's about it.
