Does anyone else in the US feel...

We should swap politicians for a while. You get our muppets and we get yours. Can't see it helping either counter but at least the sound bytes would be fresh for a while.

I'm in! I'd just love to hear, "Please elect me to bugger you", in an Australian accent.

I think one powerful reason societies spiral into decline comes into play when their elites are able to isolate themselves from any negative consequences of the society's most threatening problems.

When elites can do that, they are free to either ignore those problems, or free to come up with ineffectual responses to them.

In my view, American elites have achieved the necessary isolation.

I think one of the distinguishing characteristics of Americans as a people is our ability to dispense with the past and reinvent ourselves. If we could manage to find the will, we could make a comeback.

By the way, I am pessimistic about America. I don't think we'll find the political will to change things. Not this time around.

Lots of people feel this. People generally feel what they're told to feel.

I think some folks are naturally optimistic, others naturally pessimistic, and others naturally cautious. That to my simple mind, explains most opinions on this topic.

But I also think brushing up on Jared Diamond's studies of why civilizations collapse (or even sometimes survive crucial challenges) might be an excellent idea for just about anyone.

Diamond identifies, if I recall, about sixteen or more key factors to take into consideration. That's opposed to the one absolutely key factor -- sexual morality -- that a preacher basses his views of it on.

An outdated comparison yet a good example is that of the roman empire. There are many factors that caused its collapse. Yet while it may appear that others lead to its collapse. The majority of the collapse actually occurred within itself as people viewed themselves as invincible. Of course as we know the empire never completely vanished. It is still here today and is know as the Catholic Church.

My view is that it is our duty to never stop questioning things. Never stop understanding why you do something. This would not be considered pessimistic or optimistic.

It is in fact the majority that hold the power. I.E. Fightclub and the history of the world

America can only be compared to a "Ship of Fools"; the Ship is on a dangerous course and the Captain and Crew ignore all pleas to find safer waters. Eventually the ship is sunk, not because such an accident was preventable, but because the arrogance and bravado of the Captain had placed them in perilous situations.

Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render punishment to the proud.

I've traveled beyond our borders quite a bit.
And despite all of our troubles and all of our faults, I cannot think of anywhere I would rather be.
And since thousands and thousands of foreigners immigrate to the United States every year, I think we must be doing something right.
