Bible Student: You make great points. I've learned a lot from people "in the know".
Many Christians that read the Bible have no idea how much was written in metaphore, prose, & poetry.
It takes some honest curiosity & work to dig out the meanings in the Christian Bible.
Thanks to all. I'm still learning having been at this serious Bible study hobby only
15 or so years. I will never know everything but the journey is wonderful.
I've shared Bible Studies with J.W.'s a Babtist Ministers, a minister of a non denominational churc, & my beloved Uncle, a deacon in one of the most fundamentalist Chruch of Christ.
As an aside, tho very fundamentalist, my Uncle never saw Christmas as a religious holiday but celebrated on Dec. 25th as a national holiday only.

I haven't read all these posts but have at least skimmed most.
Someone(s) brought up how old Infant Jesus might have been when the Magi
presented him with gifts.
So "how old would He have been when the Magi got to where he was"?
Point of curiosty for me. Would appreciate help with this.
Thank you.

The Emphatic Diaglott was written by Benjamin Wilson, and first published in 1864.Greber was born 10 years later.

Good on you for taking the time to go and check it out. Never be afraid of the truth. Always ask 'Is it really so?' Watch out for those people who don't like you asking awkward questions. As Proverbs tells us 'there is safety in the multitude of counsellors.' Christ's Prophet. Certainty for eternity.

I've had some people say He may have been as old as two years old. The Bible doesn't really go into it.

Judging from the distance they would have to walk if they missed the last camel out of town, Jesus would have been about 40 years old. Only kidding. :D

My answer:-
What you appear to be saying is:-
  1. The word ‘Hell’ does not belong in the Bible.
  2. Many churches don’t teach Hell.
  3. The Ancient Jews had no concept of Hell.
  1. Yes the word Hell is a substitute word for lots of things, including grave, pit, the abode of the dead, and Sheol. In the Old Testament it was understood as the abode of the good and the wicked. But as a general rule, what may be obscure in the Old Testament, is made clearer in the New Testament. The word Hell is recorded 51 times in the KJV. The non-Biblical origin of the English word ‘Hell’ is not important. The overwhelming fact is, that Hell does exist. There are many people today who can attest to its’ existence, because they have been there and been resuscitated.
  2. Yes, many churches don’t preach Hell, because they are week and don’t want to offend. What else can you say? The days are urgent.
  3. The ancient Jews did have a concept of Hell. To say that Hell to the Old Testament Jew is nothing more than a grave and there is no consciousness in every instance, is incorrect. Consider these Scriptures:-...
*
1. That is Baloney! The word Hell isn't found anywhere in Tanakh or the NT.

2. Or perhaps they got the message on Sheol.

3. No, actually they didn't. Sheol is not Hell.
Sheol is where ALL the dead go to await the End and Final Judgment!

I do not celebrate christmas, but I do give gifts to my children at many times of the year, just because I love them. They are not in any way sad about not celebrating Christmas.
Giving gifts is not celebrating something? Why do you give gifts if you're not celebrating. Another one of your flawed, defective rules and regulations.

Just as a point of my curiosity about how old Jesus might have been when the Magi made contact. One wonder how long Mary & Joseph would have suck around after Mary and infant Jesus were fit for travel. One would think they would have gone home as soon as travel was pratical and safe. Maybe a week or so?

No. Medical care (and longevity) not being then what they are now, plus purity laws concerning women who are bleeding, Mary would have had to wait until all bleeding stopped, until she and the baby were stable, before getting on a donkey and riding all the way home. Authorities surmise that it would have been about two years before the magoi arrived -- and it doesn't say how many of them there were.

sojourner: You mention some interesting details in the Infant Jesus story and say that
"authorities" surmise it would have been about 2 yrs. before the magoi (magi) arrived.
Who are the authorities you reference? 2 yrs before the magoi arrived from where?
It's inconceivable that the magi/magoi would have made a journey over long distances without a large convoy, caravan if you like, to carry provisions, water, clothing, etc.
Likey the journey would have been made with a couple of hundred people including armed gaurds on such a long trek.
If the magi knew in advance of the birth of Jesus then they could have planned the journey "from the east" (wherever that was) in advance to visit Jesus as an infant. If the magi departed after Jesus was born it's likely Jesus could have been perhaps 2 years old when visited.
The Bible says the Magi "came to worship Him". If so that implies a recognition of who Jesus was and a belief in Him as something/someone significant.

Saturnalia may the 'attachment' here, not the other way around. The early church may have had to scramble to maintain credibility by incorporating Xian themes into pagan ones, but this doesn't necessarily mean that Xmas is non-Xian or not to do with Christ.

If one is part of a religion claiming to be Christian, they are not a true Christian, as the scriptures clearly indicate.
If one is part of a group claiming to be Christian, they are not a true Christian.......
Does your group claim to be Christian or not?

I said religion, not group. The scriptures clearly indicate that religions created by man are false. Not Christian. The Christ created the Christian congregation, not a religion created by men. He called it the "one true faith". I am part of that congregation. They were made up of the little flock, the annointed. Their associates are the great flock, of which I am one.

Uh huh. And if you were part of the first group, you'd be the first to admit it, I bet.
