Does it Matter that Hitler was a Theist?

Now and then one or another person on this board has raised Hitler's religious beliefs as evidence for...what? Does it matter that Hitler seems to have believed in a god? Was his belief in deity at all significant to what he did? Do you think it would have changed anything if he had been less religious -- perhaps even an atheist? Why or why not?

No, I don't think it matters whether or not he was a theist, but many religious people seem very eager to claim that hitler was an atheist, and that its his atheism that drove him to carry out his atrocities. At that point I think a little history lesson is in order.

As an atheist/agnostic I get in this debate quite often...however it is because the theists say hitler was an atheist and that isn't true. Look some people just do crazy things.

No it does not matter what someone believes (or claims to), it simply matters what they do. Hitler and Staling killed millions of people, their beliefs do not define them but their actions do. As for the Catholic Church supporting Hitler, there is something worth talking about.

No. Does Hitler even matter?

Actually yes, at least relative to human life on earth. It is something important to learn from because it can (and is) happening again. Over all it really doesn't even matter if all humanity was wiped out by a deadly virus. But to us, it is important to remember.

Hitler would have been the same if he'd been theist, atheist, deist, agnostic or whatever. The man had syphilis, a disease that causes people to go insane (unless you get a shot of penicillin). The man was mentally ill and he was a sociopath and a psychopath.

Does it matter that Ghandi was a theist (Hindu)? ;) Does it matter that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a theist (Christian)? Does it matter that John Lennon was an atheist? ;););) (Men of peace).
