Does Santa exist?

I would like to start a debate based on the evidence for and against the existence of Santa Claus.

What is the evidence for Santa?

What is the evidence against Santa?

Why do you believe/not believe in Santa?

The milk and cookies disappear

Asking a question like this prompts me to wonder if perhaps it isn't past your bed time.

Santa is a spirit.

Proof
Kids that believe in said spirit get gifts for christimas
Adults that believe in said spirit will provide gifts for children

Subplemental
christian belief is not necessary for belief in santa

Breathe

Hostis humani generis
Kids that believe in said spirit get gifts for christimas
Adults that believe in said spirit will provide gifts for children

Doesn't work...

My wife and I do not believe in the "spirit of Santa". My children do not learn of Santa, and we have explicitly told them that Santa is a myth, a story--that he is not real.

Yet we have still bought the children presents for Christmas. No Santa necessary--or permitted--with my kids.

Like hell I'm gonna let some fat old guy come down my chimney and bring presents to my kids that I have to pay for yet still gets all the thanks. :p

Sorry:yes:, That doesn't discount the proof it proves there are other ways of getting gifts. You are just very generous at christmas time for your reasons.

Why compare God to Santa?
I don't see why we shouldn't. The story of Santa is a myth that has grown with time with its reality grounded in a historical basis, and the myth provides a wonderful story for some people about giving and kindness. It is one more story among many pointing to something Beyond ourselves. Isn't that what God myths are supposed to do? What's so offensive about the comparison?

So Santa was made up which means God was made up?

Santa exists in the sense that his name contains power. Any parent can invoke the name of Santa around Christmas time in order to ensure their children behave. Advertising companies invoke him to help them make money. As a symbol, Santa is incredibly powerful.

Does he literally exist as a man in a red suit delivering presents around the world? No. Like many gods, there is too much evidence against a literal Santa to believe in him as traditionally presented.
