I've heard the claim that NATO, the European Union, and the Roman Catholic Church are the survival of the Roman Empire under a different form that is more acceptable in our modern world... Do you in any way agree with this?

The Roman empire, or the "Holy Roman empire? With the number of Catholics world wide and with the religion centered in the Vatican, I would say yes, the Holy Roman empire still exists though Thankfully not as powerful. ANND,Thankfully their not in the inquisition business anymore.

Yes, holy Roman Empire... Which was an attempt at resurrecting the Roman Empire.

To me the modern Roman Empire is the United States. I developed that feeling strongly during a trip to Washington, DC years ago when I toured through the city at night and saw all the buildings.

The details are totally different but the essence to me is there.

The HRE was a Frankish Empire/union centred around modern day Germany and Central Europe. It wasn't intrinsically anything to do with the Catholic Church.

No. Too many differences and too much water under the bridge.

You can talk about a legacy of the Roman Empire/HRE from Russia to the EU, but you can't say it is a continuation.

Several upstarts have tried to claim that they are the emperor of the Roman Empire. They have picked names that reveal it. 'Kaiser' and 'Tsar' are both claims to the Roman Imperial throne and are derived from 'Caesar', and other European kings have tried to name themselves Roman emperor. Its a running gag. Muslim kings do not do this, because they want to claim to be Caliph not a Roman. The Mongols have no interest in Rome, so they go with 'Khan'. Japanese want to be either Shogun or Heavenly Sovereign which is like a Pope-Emperor combination.

True. Even Napoleon claimed to be a descendant of the Roman emperors.

Clearly the answer is no-- except to my wife, and that's because she's from Italy. ;)

Italy has trouble enough taking care of itself versus actually having an empire, and the RCC is certainly not one either. The church is growing in some areas but shrinking in some others.

The headline of the magazine is hyperbole, and it obviously relates to the popularity of PF.

I hate to have to be the one to tell you folks this, but the Catholic Church is no empire. We have no emperor, no armies, no way to conquer or enforce our will, nor do we desire to have any of those things.

The Catholic Church is no more an empire than the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Baptist Church or any other church. We just happen to be the largest church.
