This question may have been asked before, but

Does the universe have consciousness?
My thought is no, but I also view the universe as a subset of all potential. Maybe the universe isn't conscious, but that doesn't mean there isn't a greater consciousness.

Although the cosmic web is similar in appearance to a neural net I would say not. The distances involved are bar to great for thought (including consciousness) to travel

One image is a fragment of neutral net showing a distance of micrometers, the other an artists impression if a fragment of cosmic web representing a distance of hundreds of thousands of lightyears

hey @SalixIncendium,

To the phrase: " It's and appearance in consciousness. ", please explain that.

maybe: " It's an appearance in consciousness.", sooo...what does that mean, visibly.
Are these waves from some form of `energy` of received signals or ???
The Cosmos has no cognizance, only it's future will be known, until the future,
no `now` you know !

As I see it, there is the observer, and there is the observed. What is what is observed appears to the observer. If the observer is the Supreme Self (Atman) i.e. Pure Consciousness, the "I" that remains after everything that is not "I" is dropped, then what is observed (the universe) cannot "have" the observer.

One can't be the observer and not the cause of the dropping of the not `I's`, both,
can one ?
Where in Brahman thinking was there any end to Nirvana,
Even Atman can't observe the `end` !

But....I'm always confused with life anyway.

No, not in any casual sense of the term. Consciousness as we experiment it and how we recognize it is dependent on a brain, sensorial capacity, the possession of will and desires. The universe doesn't have those.

These questions seem to suggest an insecurity or looking for a way to validate dubious religious beliefs. Asking the question often seems a ploy that suggests it is possible. it's like asking "How often do you beat your wife?", and even though the guy never does, it's the asking that suggests it's true.

If these questions are going to be asked there needs to be some evidence of it, and also what the answer will suggest. When the question is vague it opens the door for any sort of nonsense answers.

Personally I do not have the answer fully understood so I thought I would be a nice topic to discuss.

Does the universe have consciousness?
Well in my Advaita (non-dual Hinduism=God and creation are not two) view Consciousness is the ground of reality and the material universe is a derivative of Consciousness. Consciousness then temporarily limits itself in finite forms until it liberates itself through knowledge of its Source (Moksha).

The short answer to the question posed above is 'Yes'.

I don’t know. I’m open for the possibility for it to be a ginormous brain with consciousness or entertaining the idea without committing to or believing such.
