Can a person be dogmatic about religion or politics without being an insufferable bore? If so, how?

Dogma;a doctrine or body of doctrines concerning faith or morals formally stated and authoritatively proclaimed by a church.

If someone were to recite the doctrines of anything, be it fly-fishing, politics, Religion, unless the person you are talking to is equally interested in the subject as the speaker....... well, I would be bored to death...........:D

Well, I would assume for people who share the same dogmas, being dogmatic would be very interesting. I think, for most religions (though not my own), having a formal religious institutional authority is productive. Either religions are dogmatic (have a specific set of beliefs) or they don't. The dogmatic religions certainly are more successful than the ones that are not.

As a heathen, the only dogma I have to deal with is logical consistency. Either a belief is logically consistent with the culture, worldview and lore of my ancestors or it is not. But other than that... it would take a very brave individual to tell a heathen what to believe or think.

Would you invite someone to your wedding who you knew (if invited) would spend considerable effort lecturing your guests on his views of religion or politics? Or would you rather arrange for his invitation to "accidently" have printed on it the wrong date for the wedding?

If you were considering inviting someone to your wedding then you'd assume that there are other more redeeming features that negate the fact he's a dogmatic bore.
Of course, I also know people who have ended up with 300 people at their weddings - 1/2 of whom they'd never even met, so I guess it depends on whether you're actually in control of proceedings or not.

I don't think I could ever be so 'calculating' as to accidentally send the invite with the wrong date; I think I would rather front the person out and politely as him/her not to get involved with talking about his views..........

I hate deceit; I have seen so much of it in my life (I have even been guilty of it myself) - I honestly would never want to go back to that again........

Of course not, Victor! I was recently buttonholed by a person who insisted on telling me in great detail his opinions. It was a very one sided "conversation" since he wouldn't let me get in a word edgewise. Although I agreed with most of his points on politics and religion, I found myself getting delirious with the need to go to sleep. That's what prompted the thread. Not my memories of your excellent posts!

Yes, but chances are I would end up mocking them, their religion and their politics... you know, let them know whose wedding it was. ;)

Quite, but you don't have to achieve that by mocking them...............

Not being a sufferer of any dogma, it is unlikely that spouting such in front of me would generate enough interest to raise an eyebrow. Dogmatic discussions are inherently boring as they are circular.

I think of Sundays when you speak of Dogma and Boredom. I think the best think to do on a cold winter Sunday when confronted with Boredom, is put on a nice warm coat, get a lead, and take your dogma for a walk.
