So who voted other ?

I've read the whole thread and not one post extolling the virtues of rats or guinea pigs or rabbits, but there is one vote for 'other'.

Wombats make great pets. And geckos are a good choice if you have a cockroach problem.

Cats rule though.
And they may be manipulative, but so is your mum and your kids, and your spouse (especially your spouse). So if dogs are better because they are so loyal and obedient, why aren't you living with a pack of dogs ?

If you have no problem with adding another manipulative member to your group, would you mind if i took control over your life? :p

Dogs drool, eat their own poo and then lick your face. DISGUSTING! Dog fur is stinky, especially when wet. Their fur feels like bristle.

It is not common for dogs to eat poo.
Also, the fur won't stink if you give the dog regular baths, and there are different types of fur.

I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen this question asked yet, or I have, but have just forgotten. Anyway, do you prefer dogs or cats? Most people are one or the other, but don't necessarily mind the other. Me, I have to admit, I hate cats. I'm very much a dog person.

EDIT: I thought about this after I posted. After saying whether you're a dog or cat person (or other), tell us why.
If I had to choose I would choose cats, because they are more independent and that just clicks better with me. But I really dont mind dogs and I think they can be pretty awesome as well.

I like them both pretty much equally. I appreciate the distinctive traits of each.

I had a cat once that started to drool when you pet him :p. Still liked him, though.

Spaz likes it so much when you scratch him right at his lower back he not only purrs really loudly but he'll stretch his head around any which way he can to reach an area where he can lick and nibble at you (which is kind of odd while trying to purr at the same time - all broken up :p ). A kind of "oh oh yes I like that I love you yes love you love you keep doing that oh oh". I guess it would be kind of the same as the whole wagging the tail and thumping the leg and rapid panting kind of thing you see in the cartoons that dogs do. :p :kat:

You don't need to bathe cats though. They just keep themselves clean and soft.

I don't get why obedience is such a great factor about dogs. Do people want to feel in power? What sort of relationship is that?

Cats can be loyal too. Cats from outside often came to me because I gave them affection, attention and cuddles. Not because of food. That's what their careless owners did. Feed them and not take care of them.

Before we adopted our cat, he bonded to us, even though someone else was feeding him too. Then we took him in, because he is so lovely, we couldn't resist. He's a very friendly cat that will come up to anyone. He chose us though, that's what makes the relationship special.

He makes great pics too!

I'm pretty sure it's not obedience for most people, but loyalty and dedication.

It's not always a positive thing, as others have shared previously. It can be harmful to the dog, and can be too much responsibility for some. But for me it's hard not to appreciate another creature when it can be engaged with me in such a way.

Like i said earlier i like cats too, pretty much equally and for different reasons. Mainly because i don't view their sense of survival negatively. It comes off rather cute, among other things.

I have a dedicated cat. He adopted me. This cat showed up at my door step as a kitten and had been faithful for 5 years now. The cat chose me not the other way around.

My dog is my best friend and goes everywhere I go when I am not working. He eats what I eat and lays at my feet always wanting to be able to see where I am.

He never make a mess in the house and will wake me up if he has to go out. No one could ever sneak up on me, the dog is very protective of me and alerts me if someone even walks down the road in front of my home.

This dog is good with my grandchildren and even is friends with the cat unless food is involved. Then all deals are off. :D

Cats can certainly show loyalty and dedication too, and i'm sure that there are a lot of individual stories that can come as a shock to many people. In fact even with big wild cats, there are some instances where they act in a way completely opposite to how they're usually portrayed.

I think that dogs are generally more loyal and dedicated, but that doesn't negate that cats can show such emotions too, and in some cases to unexpected levels.

It's not about feeling powerful, it's because dogs are a nuisance if they are not taught manners and can become dangerous if not properly socialised with other dogs and children. You should allow them to have their own personality of course but you need to guide their behaviour. Some people are afraid of dogs or don't like dogs, but unfortunately dogs don't understand that not everyone wants to pet them and think they are cute like their family does so you have to try and control how they interact in public. When I've taken Shiloh out for walks we have come across other dogs who have displayed aggressive behaviour towards him, and I've had to pick him up just so we could walk past safely, and it's unacceptable.

I have 13 cats and 3 dogs. One of the dogs is a herding dog and tries to do that with all of us. he gets vexed when the cats ignore him, but he still tries to do his duty.

All of my cats have their own pet dogs. I used to have 5 dogs until last year when two of them died. but still, the cats have their own personal dogs to sleep with, rub up against and torment.

The dogs do not bother them when they eat out of their food dishes or drink their water.

On the other hand, the cats defend their territory against the dogs if they overstep the boundaries.

Cats are easier to maintain, dogs provide a sense of security.

There is a cat that often comes up to my house. I feed him, water him, and give him attention. He has to be someone's cat though because he is very well behaved, is not shy, very friendly, and shows up at my door every so often. I'd let him in but he isn't fixed. When I get some extra cash I might take him to a low-cost spay/neuter clinic because whoever's cat this is (I named the guy Trevor) is obviously not a very responsible care taker.

For some dogs it is necessary. But with proper raising and training it's not so much of an obedience issue as it is a behavioral issue. Irish wolfhounds, for example, often 150 or more pounds, and are extremely massive dogs. It is absolutely imperative that an owner proper raise them to be exceptionally well behaved because there simply is no controlling a dog that size without having to use the force of multiple people or other means. Pit bulls are another breed that must be well behaved, because an ill-raised and trained Pit Bull can be very aggressive and very dangerous. Or with a Tibetan Mastiff, they require regular socializing so they can learn and hone their sense of what behaviors to tolerate and allow, and what kind of behavior is unacceptable around them.
But regardless of a obedience or training, a loved dog will usually be loyal to it's primary care taker(s), some to more or less degrees depending on their breed, such as the Black Lab who is fiercely loyal dog who will stick by your side and will always let you know you are loved. And Rottweilers are an awesome breed of dog. My sister used to have one years ago, and when her husband began to beat her, her full blooded, full sized German Rotty turned on him and had him backed into a corner. And don't you dare mess with a child a Rottweiler has taken to. But at the same time they are very patient and forgiving of young children, often doing nothing more than whinning and skimpering away when a child grabs and ear or handful of fur and yanks and pulls.
