Dolphins save swimmers from shark

painted wolf

Grey Muzzle
A pod of dolphins came to the rescue of a group of New Zeland swimmers. A great white shark began stalking the swimmers coming as close as about 6 ft from them. The dolphins decided to put themselves between the swimmers and the shark, forming a protective circle around them.

Nice to know that Humans arn't the only animals that have altruism.

I love these stories! I've actually heard several, not only about dolphins vs. sharks, but one in which a manta ray allowed a person who'd been stranded in the water, miles away from shore, to sit on its back, and actually 'taxied' him to land. (Minus any fare.)

I've only heard one story in which a shark was seen as being helpful to people... Maybe it's all the bad press?

What is sad about this is that thousands of dolphins will be killed this year alone, especially in Asian countries. When will we learn to respect nature... :(

Seriously though, the intellect of a dolphin rivals our own. If they had hand-like appendages, who knows what they'd do!

Maybe someday we will take better care of them. Did you know that dolphins are some of the few animals that actually mate for pleasure?

Do you mean "few who feel pleasure when mating" or "few who mate solely for pleasure (at times)"? It it's the latter, you are correct. Animals which will mate for pleasure are: The Great Apes (including humans; we are one of the Great Apes), the lesser apes, some monkeys (notably, baboons), cetaceans, and several domesticated species.

Did you know that a pig's orgasm lasts for thirty minutes? Or that a lion can mate as much as thirty times a day.

I hadn't heard about the manta ray , but I have heard storys of dolphins aiding swimmers ashore . :)

Years ago I read about an interesting study done on Dolphins . They kept a group in a tank along with a shark . Everything went well , both shark and dolphins left the other alone . untill one of the dolphins were about to about to give birth . Then the dolphin killed the shark . Smart thing to do if you know what sharks are like when they smell blood . :)

:sarcastic Funny. Anytime scientific studies are done, seems like something or someone suffers.
