Don't Let the ISS Crash

There is a plan to crash it instead of giving it the status of a historic site and preserving it! First of all it can be mothballed and put into a different orbit out of the way. We can fill it or seal it and attach some control thrusters, pull out some equipment to sell, and some to put in museums. It can stay in orbit for centuries a symbol of the great accomplishment of nations working together, ignoring differences. Its as amazing if not more so than many other landmarks on Earth.

What happens down here doesn't happen up there. Its a different place. So what if we can't use the ISS anymore? Its got value where it is even just circling the planet.

Heck, we could send it out into space like Voyager. Crashing it is just horrible. Send up some rockets to attach and a lot of fuel, and launch it somewhere. What a great thing to send it out into space instead of crashing it.

Crashing it is the worst possible outcome. Its a mess, it burns up but doesn't just vanish. All that stuff burning up as it falls is going into the air. Its a terrible symbol then.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

It's happened before. Just a normal way of disposing of old space junk. Of course, if you wish you could always check out Skylab.

The reason to de-orbit space junk is that it is a risk to future missions. Leaving it up there will eventually result in Kessler syndrome. (That's the scenario from Gravity.)
Sending the ISS to a higher orbit (or even out of Earth orbit) is prohibited by the costs.
