Door knockers.

The religious folk who walk up to your front door and knock.

What are your thoughts on this practice? Do you mind when door knockers come to your house?

A pastor and his daughter woke me up from my nap today to invite me to their church. I minded a bit but wasn't gonna make a fuss with the daughter present (I got a bit of decency).

One of these days I plan on inviting one of these door knockers in for an honest discussion on our religious beliefs. There are many ways one can effectively go about arguing against the Christian faith. Next one to wake me up from a nap I will deChristify I swear...

I definitely mind a bit, the whole door knocking. I don't knock on churches door, telling them I believe they are wrong.

I find it invasive and irritating.

I tend to politely end any discussion as quickly as I can.

I dont mind as long as its not too early in the morning and that they accept a no and dont return if someone doesn't want to talk.

I wonder if I could politely have a discussion on religion with door to door missionaries.

Avoiding confrontation is a great skill, but now I am trying to learn assertiveness (as opposed to aggression).

So, having a religious discussion with people who came to my front door asking for religious discussion might be good practice for me. I'd probably like to discuss the "Problem of Evil", as well as poke holes in any apologetics that get thrown at me. Can I do this in a polite/assertive manner as opposed to an aggressive manner? One day, I would like to.

I have always tended to enjoy friendly debate. The pursuit of knowledge is the best.

I have. Some of the JWs that have been around don't go away as easily.

I admit, they didn't really know what to do with me.

My husband manages to.

In my case, I really don't know what the heck they're talking about. My frame of reference isn't Christian(and that's all I've ever had at the door).

I typically let them in. Our discussions weren't always religious in nature, but that's always how they began. I think people get bored sometimes and when people aren't so resistant and more accepting, and safe, they become friends more so than anything else. Eventually, watching tv became a past time.

He's not just spider man, he's the "amaz i i i i ng" spider man. Just something I remember one of the church people saying while watching tv. No lie, they can be pretty cool once you get comfortable with them. We never saw eye to eye on everything, but that didn't it change the way they were. Most have been very nice people, but watch out for the wolves. I'm guessing they are everywhere and getting inside your door is a first step into your area of safety. Just something to consider. Otherwise, respect and curtesy go a long way with the safer types. If you're willing to risk a potential breech, I mean. A drink of water or glass of tea isn't a bad thing to offer, and most are ok sitting outside, anyway. By the way, I don't belong to any of their churches, but I still hold them in high regard.

Does anyone sell vacuum cleaners door to door anymore? Or Fuller Brush? I remember those guys showing up at the door every so often.

Maybe that might be a good comeback. If someone knocks on your door hawking religion, ask them if they have any vacuum cleaners for sale. If they say no, offer to sell them a vacuum cleaner.

Difficult question.
Me, personally? - no, I don't mind it. I like getting into religious debates. If anyone comes into my house, they end up in my living room withy ancestor shrine as a centerpiece. I will gladly offer coffee and tea and talk to them.

As a general practice? Yes, I mind.
I consider it to be the job of the deity to choose and pick up new followers, if They want them.
A god or goddess can easily send signs, heal someone or appear to them in a dream - why send people around to do it??
If people are polite and accept a no, it's not too bad I guess. But still, I'd rather they leave others in peace.

I simply say, pleasantly, "I won't take up your time."

Never fails ─ well, certainly not so far.

I'm on RF to discuss religious issues. Why should I be annoyed by people offering a RL discussion?

If I have time I engage with them. I enjoy the discussion.

We don't get them here. In the UK we had to put a sign on the front gate. "Unsolicited callers will be reported to the police"

There was an age where door knocking was completely acceptable. You had the Fuller Brush man and the Avon lady. But that has changed. It is no longer acceptable for anyone to knock at your door unless they are family, friend, someone you have business with, or someone in an emergency. Door knockers are considered highly irritating. No one wants to hear about the magazines someone is selling or read their Watchtower magazines.
