Nice choices Becky.
I never did get to see the Beatles or John Lennon, but I did manage to see George Harrison in the early 70's. His backup band was Ravi Shankar. Frankly, George's set was a little disappointing, however Ravi Shankar blew my little mind. Absolutely stunning. I don't think there is much question that he was perhaps the greatest living master of the Sitar. Again, simply stunning. So, stunning, that George was a let down... and I love George Harrison's music. It was a bit of a shocker.
As I have blathered on elsewhere, I have seen Zeppelin twice and Robert Plant once. Of all the bands I have seen, they were definitely the loudest. Even louder than Pink Floyd. My favorite description of their concert is this. Imagine the opening to Stairway to Heaven. It is rather quiet, melodic and unassaming. When I saw them do this live... the sound spiralled around the Pacific Colleseum... spiralled... like a Stairway. The other aspect that you have to appreciate is that each note of that rather quiet intro is like a thunderclap. It is absolutely as staggering as it is unexpected. By the time the rest of the band kicks in... well... you cannot imagine without seeing it... My ears rang for about 3 days afterwards.
It is my deep suspicion that Robert Plant's astounding vocals are indelibly seared into my DNA. Kashmir will always own my soul, forever. In those day also, there was free and rather excessive use of lasers. A few years after this period, it was decided that perhaps lasers should be toned down at concerts. When I say their light show was dazzling... well, you will have to take my word for it. Spellbinding, and blinding, might be a little closer to the mark.
