Duke Nukem Forever

It seems that Gearbox Software acquired rights to the franchise, and with most of the former 3DRealms development team working for them now, they are going to finish DNF and release it next year.

Even if it does come out, the question is whether or not it will live up to the hype that has accumulated over a decade. I loved the original Duke3D as a kid, so due to nostalgic memories I'm kind of hoping it turns out good.

After waiting this long, nothing will live up to my standards. It could be the best game ever made and I will still be disappointed.

And I'm still waiting for Deus ex 3!!! 2011? Yeah, right!

I wasn't a fan of Duke as a kid, so I'm not that excited as it is. And yet even so, considering all that's happened the past decade, it's really easy to be cynical.

According to SpoonyOne, it will definitely come out, but it's also basically a graphics facelift from the original game, with very little difference in gameplay. (apparently, the first part of the game is just the final battle from DN3D)

Duke Nukem Forever... Coming out next year? :biglaugh: What a joke.

Also, I would NOT buy a game based on how much hype it receives. I waited for Spore for nearly 2 years for that reason, and EA turned it into a steaming pile of ****.

I was the same way for Too Human, but I had to wait 10 ^_^
If DNF comes out next year then it's the ends times. I mean if one things that not going to ever happens happens way not something else.

Hail to the king, baby

I used to play Duke Nukem 3D all the time...

I'll play it, but with my budget I'll be waiting a little bit ;)

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

Well if the original dev team is involved, I think the odds are better that it will retain that old school shooter flavor. Of course I will welcome any graphic upgrade in light of the Dukes favorite *ahem* pastime between kicking *** and chewing bubblegum.

Ouch... it came out today, and the reviews are brutal. I was anticipating this game, but from the looks of things I think I'll wait 'til it hits the bargain bin.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily blame 2K considering they produced Bioshock, Civ IV and owns Rockstar which is putting out the best story driven games at the moment. From what I've read it's the cutscenes and unless the game is heavily story driven such as Dragon Age, the Grand Theft Series, F.E.A.R., etc. and done well it won't go over well.

I'd pass this game because frankly Rockstar and Bioware have ruined the concept of first person shooters for me. But then again except for F.E.A.R. and a few others I don't particularly care for shooters. They all tend to be the same thing. A linearly driven pointless story.

That's one of the many complaints about this game. A lot of reviews and forum posts suggests that DNF is too linear and has regenerating health and two weapon limit akin to Halo, apparently to make it more accessible to the console market. This upsets a lot of fans considering the original Duke was PC centric, with an emphasis on collecting items and exploration. The consensus seems to be that the only thing it has going for it is the original Duke Nukem style humor and pop culture references.

The only shooters I've (casually) played over the last few years is Team Fortress 2 and Left for Dead (1 & 2).

The console and PC mix really ****** me off. I have a six year old PC with a dual core processor and a 9800 GT Geforce card. Not nearly "top of the line" but it is far more powerful than what is put out on consoles. I understand the market dynamics and that game producers want to hit the three major markets but it is kind of ridiculous that many new games suffer from porting. I am quite happy that even my old PC running on a 32 bit system can play the Witcher 2, a great game, while I still have fun on the PS3 with the first Infamous game.

And screw all the technology. Nothing compares to finishing Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. When you defeat Irenicus that's the best. Take that David Warner.

In other words, I don't need a shooter with a crap storyline when Rockstar can put out a sandbox game with a tremendous storyline.

Considering the critics tend to only play these games for a few hours before giving reviews, and base their scores on grab-value(at least if their reviews of Splatterhouse vs. that of an actual fan of the series is any indication), I'm going to wait to see what the DN fanbase has to say about it.

As a person who isn't much of a Duke fan in the first place, I'll probably just grab this off Gamefly (once I get an account) and play it that way. What little I've heard of the game tells me it's not worth 60 bucks.

So, they've since spoken, and the game looks pretty worthless now. The critics are right in this case, it would seem.

They didn't resurrect Duke Nukem. They merely dug his corpse up, hung it from strings of hype and did a cheap marionette show for a quick cash in.
