Still a developing news story but New Zealand was hit by an earthquake on monday morning (measuring 7.5 on the richter scale). The ministry of civil defence and emergency management has issued a tsnuami warning from east cape to southland, including Wellington, Malborough sounds/ Tasman Bay, the Chatam Islands and a marine threat for all new zealand coastal areas.

My friends were on an 8th floor apartment in Wellington when the quake hit, needless to say they were a bit shaken, but alright.

Woops, haven't been on in a while. Thanks @YmirGF , we are all well here. Had a hip-flask fall off the shelf here. Luckily it wasn't open!

Some buildings in the wellington cbd are still closed, a car park is set for demolition. Most of the upheaval (literal! 2m upward movement in some places) was in the south island, around Kaikoura. New chasms, rifts have opened up, some with up to 2 metres of movement vertically, and 10 metres laterally.

There will be a rather large cleanup bill, there has even been talk of redirecting the state Highway 1 from the coast to more inland via an entirely new passage.

In terms of people, only 2 have died as a result of the quake, as massive as it was. This is mostly due to the fact it was midnight, and most people were soundly asleep in their beds. might have been a different story had it been 12 hours later.

WoW.

It's one thing hearing about it on the news but quite another seeing the aftermath photos.
It's so good that there was such little loss of life.
