What is enlightenment?

And how might a person become enlightened?

And why should a person want to become enlightened? What's so good about it?

From where you are, to where you'll be.
If the place that I end up being is decidedly worse than where I am now does it still count as enlightenment?

What is the opposite to enlightenment?

It won't be if one is "enlightened". (I've never put much stock in destinations).

Where most people currently are. Look around. A state of ignorance.
What type of things do the enlightened have that the unenlightened don't?

How does it differ from simply being wise? Or knowledgeable?

Why is it a good thing to be? What advantages come with it?

Because it's has nothing to do with wisdom or knowledge. It's about shattering ones perceptions.

Peace? Calmness? Serenity. A sense of smallness in the Universal order?

Enlightenment originally meant the point as which you start thinking for yourself. Choose to set out on your own path instead of following the path of others.

Now it often has a vague religious connotation which frankly I don't think anyone can give you an exact answer for.

Not sure I can really give you a good answer for that.

My path won't work for you as it's mine,.if that makes sense.

Dig deep within yourself. You'll find your path.
Yes, we are all different

But out of interest what worked for you?

What practical things can I do to become more enlightened?

Bearing in mind I don't like big books :p
Each person is different, hence the many disciplines and paths that exist, and even with the multiple disciplines and practices, one has to be ready to make some wholesale changes in their life and/or be prepared to see the world from an entirely new perspective.

The first piece of advice I can offer is to approach everything with an open mind and do your best to observe the world through a lens of dispassion. That means judgments like the hate for certain people you mention in another thread and the dislike for big books you mention in this one would need to be examined and released.
