Everybody's gay! In Edmonton, anyway.

So here in Edmonton there is a thing kids can join called the Gay-Straight Alliance. It is essentially a way for a gay student to get some support. Of course, the Catholics look to be undermining the whole thing:

I'm no expert on this, but from what I've read gay teenagers have a pretty high suicide rate, and this kind of thing lowers it. But that's not what I wanted to talk about.

As some of you may be aware, my oldest daughter is a 90 mile an hour, Birkenstock wearing, Ellen PVRing lesbian, who I happen to love very, very much. She hasn't 'come out' because her mom is a JW and would disown her. So, when I heard this at work this morning, my initial reaction was to suggest that perhaps the Micks should be disbanded now that they've managed to start harassing children even when they aren't raping them.

Our project manager, who is a cowboy kinda guy, shocked me by saying that his youngest son was gay, and that he thought the same way. I live in the most conservative province in Canada, and I work with oil men, and I had a conversation with a burly oil field worker about how important it is to allow gay children the right to express themselves free from the fetters of an outdated philosophy. Today is starting off pretty well.

What do you think? Should the Catholic schools just shut up?

Yes, but they won't. But what they could do is encourage all gay kids to go to other schools, just like they encourage all the special needs kids to go over to the public system. Oh yeah, but that has to do with underfunding and achievement test results. Gay kids would probably increase the achievement test results.

I think that if Catholics want to consider themselves as loving and caring when it comes to the livlihood of teens, they cannot act against things like this. What possible reason could they have for discouraging this?

For an organization that deliberately covers up sexual abuse by their members I wouldn't expect them to do the right thing, including just shutting up.

This problem is not unique to the RCC. One of the biggest obstacles to GSAs for minors is that it is very difficult to protect kids from the idiocy of their own parents in general.

The RCC is in a particularly difficult situation. The parents involved tend to be unusually conservative and engaged with their children. They are very likely to cause trouble for the administration if they find out that the school has deliberately not told them what their child is doing.

A private institution has only minimal authority to protect a kid from their parents. It is a big problem for gay youth.

It'd probably help other things if they shut up too. You know, the lack of moaning might stop people from walking in on the Priest from spreading the Love of Christ all over Timmy's back.

Why is this a Catholic problem?
Does anybody know a school system that can protect students from their own parents?

It's a vague area ... this protection from parents. I was a counsellor for awhile. If the counselling I did was totally about poor parenting, it's pretty difficult to call up the parents and let them know their kid hates them.

There are many beautiful things about the Catholic Church (by experience) but one of the things I loathe is that the Church finds they have the right to meddle in other people's religions beliefs and practices. For example, near my home is a pornographic store. (Don't ask, it's in the middle of Church city.) No other Church, the manager told me, had a problem about it but the only Catholic Church (my home parish) in my area. They put up signs, marched around the building, and the manager had to shut down her business. Now it is reopened (that's when I came in thinking it was a lingerie store) to find out all the movies were in the back.

Abortion, I can somewhat see it, but homosexuality, marriage, making people loose their businesses (in what you're talking about not supporting or giving enough support(?) to gay children.)

It is great that the children have the gay-straight alliance. I wish they had that when I was growing up; that would have saved me a lot of ills with stereotypes and such.

Can your daughter go to the gay alliance meeting if she hasn't already? They can probably help with the "coming out" situations. Many teens have that problem. Being in a religious environment and/or household doesn't make it easier, I'm sure.

Don't you mean 90 kph?

Anyway, I'd prefer if Catholic schools were TWE tolerant.
