Only because we are exposed to mirrors from a very early age, and because we are educated to understand them and how they work. If you raised a child in isolation and never showed them a mirror (or any kind of reflective surface), and then when they had grown to adulthood and you suddenly exposed them to a mirror, how do you think they would react?
