As a moderate democrat, I have been invited by some conservatives to just leave the country. Frankly, I'm considering it. As the grandchild of two people born in what is now the republic of Ireland, I am eligible for Irish citizenship. Which means I'm eligible for EU citizenship. I'm going to fill out the paperwork and file for it. Do I think Ireland or the EU are utopia? No. But what is happening in the US is appalling to me. To be clear, it is Trumpism that appalls me. How about you? Have you considered bailing on this **** show?
Agree. Love it or leave it doesn't have the cache it once did.
We're American expatriates twelve years in Mexico now. It was a move for the better, and we've never regretted the trade.
Originally, it was motivated by the deteriorating American landscape, and my expectation that America was on an inexorable downward spiral where economic opportunity and the middle class were drying up, and the chances of fighting in the streets and even martial law were becoming more imminent.
Things relented a bit in the Obama years, and again now under Biden, but I see one step forward and two back hereon until America goes off the cliff and lapses into a society that works for almost nobody except a handful of predators.
I was in a conservative part of a conservative state for my last 11 years in the States, and I really came to dislike those people and their values and culture - even more these days. Some of the desire to expatriate wasn't purely practical. It was like when one comes to the point of wanting a divorce, as I did from the American right. I didn't want to live with them, I didn't want to be influenced by their voting, I didn't want to patronize their businesses (often hard to tell which those are), or pay takes that might be spent on them.
It really felt like a divorce. Yeah, I could have continued living there with these people, supporting their businesses, but I didn't want to. It would be like paying alimony, supporting people I don't like and who don't like me. That was worth something.
Now, I'm here not just because of what America is, but also because of what Mexico is. It's beautiful, the people are happy, the culture is friendly, everything grows in what looks like paradise, the prices are much lower, and the weather is perfect where we are in the mountains. How does this sound for December?:
So, even if America cleaned up its act politically, dissolved gun culture, eradicated its Republican and MAGA problem, de-weaponized religion, and somehow reversed its extreme weather trajectory, we're just not interested in returning to the States. For what?
The Republicans will be back in power, likely soon (much of the American electorate is incompetent and easily deceived; I trust them to keep making that mistake), and with it, a rapid descent into a world I don't want to be a part of. I've lost my respect and affection for America. So good luck in your decision.
This is pretty funny and apt - "I saw your act - just fluff; I can't be with anybody if I don't respect what they do.":
