Extraterrestrial Life

Do you believe that intelligent beings exist elsewhere in the universe?

If you are religious, what implications do you think the discovery of alien life would have on your beliefs?

It wouldn't bother me. G-d can create life wherever he wants.

Yes i do belive there are other race of intelligence in this univers. It is spoken about in the teaching i cultivate, so it does not affect my spiritual understanding

What does the teaching say about it?
In my understanding the teaching say that we should stay away from them, those beings are from the old univers (before current univers) and they are not here for good reasons, they do not wish that human beings become enlightened from spiritual practice.

I don't see any reason why there isn't intelligent* extra terrestrial life in the universe. If not its an awfully big waste of space.

* extra terrestrial intelligence may not on any way be comparable to human intelligence.

to imagine that humans alone are sentient in this place seems a height of arrogance

I believe (with a grain of salt, mind you) that life is an imminent property of the universe. Basically, that wherever conditions arise and are sustained long enough to facilitate the required elements/compounds coming together to produce and reproduce, accrete and evolve "life", that such will happen at some point.

It seems quite likely, in view of the numbers of planets there must be on which chemistry could occur, at the sort of reaction rates needed for life.

C S Lewis explored the idea in Out of the Silent Planet and its sequels. He was interested in another world that had not suffered the Fall.

I would take a different view from Lewis, in that to me, the Genesis story is the story of how Man acquired moral awareness and became morally responsible for his thoughts and actions, thereby inevitably losing his innocence in the process. This process would take place with any sentient beings at some stage.

I see nothing in the bible or Christian belief that would leave no room for another world, with or without morally aware beings made spiritually in the image of God, as we are said to be. They may have had, in their world, their own version of the Messiah, rather as in C S Lewis's Narnia stories.

That's an interesting thought. My question is, isn't that the same as...anything else? Given the necessary conditions, whatever those conditions are known to produce...will be.

Or is there something I'm missing?

100% Yes. Baha'u'llah has offered;

"Thou hast, moreover, asked Me concerning the nature of the celestial spheres. To comprehend their nature, it would be necessary to inquire into the meaning of the allusions that have been made in the Books of old to the celestial spheres and the heavens, and to discover the character of their relationship to this physical world, and the influence which they exert upon it. Every heart is filled with wonder at so bewildering a theme, and every mind is perplexed by its mystery. God, alone, can fathom its import…. Know thou that every fixed star hath its own planets, and every planet its own creatures, whose number no man can compute." Baha’u’llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah, pp. 162-163.

It has also been told as to what state those creatures will be in;

" The earth has its inhabitants, the water and the air contain many living beings… then how is it possible to conceive that these stupendous stellar bodies are not inhabited? Verily, they are peopled, but let it be known that the dwellers accord with the elements of their respective spheres. These living beings do not have states of consciousness like unto those who live on the surface of this globe: the power of adaptation and environment molds their bodies and states of consciousness, just as our bodies and minds are suited to our planet." – Abdu’l-Baha, Divine Philosophy, pp. 114-115.

It has also been said that there is intelligence where other beings also can know and Love God.

I see a future where we strive for the unity of the unity, truth seems to fulfill our inner Sci Fi visions :D

I have no problem with and believe that indeed extraterrestrial life and even intelligent lif exists elsewhere in the universe, one of many universes. The Baha'i Faith teaches there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
Life grows anywhere in the universe. Not all life needs sunshine nor does all life need air. Sentient life may be the most difficult to appear. But infinities don't hold to limits. So there is bound to be other sentient life out there.

Are there eternal beings that have always existed though?

As far as there being life in universe I would say definitely. After all, we're the extraterrestrials in the universe when you think about it.

I think the problem we have with finding life is our technology, and the fact that space is so freaking big even light is like a snail going from one point to another.

I think as our technology advances though, we're going to start seeing things and maybe even sooner then that as we explore our own solar system.

Already Mars is looking like it could be a great candidate for at least microbial life. Other places like Europa and Titan as well.

I think its just a matter of time. I certainly hope I see the discovery of life elsewhere before I die. Even if it's an alien fungus or a fossil.

If I were to place a bet, I would bet that there is life elsewhere in the universe.

Do I *believe* there is life elsewhere? No. Do I believe there is no life elsewhere? No.

I just find the odds to be in favor of there being life elsewhere, given what we know of the chemistry of life and how the basic molecules are distributed.

That said, the vast majority of the universe is completely inhospitable for life. And the Fermi paradox is an interesting counter-argument, although I think it tends to point to 'intelligent' life either being rare or dangerous (dark universe theory).
