For those that don't know, the Julian Calendar used to celebrate New Years on April 1st. When Pope Gregory XIII introduced the new Gregorian Calendar, which moved New Year to January 1st, those in France that continued to celebrate New Years on April 1st were called April fish.

I heard it was only a relatively few who remained with the old tradition. Those who accepted 1 jan as new years day would mock the traditionalists.

Another story goes back to Constantine where a jester said he could make a better job of running the empire. A very amused Constantine made the jester emperor for the day, his only edict was that everyone must play jokes on others.
