Faces in Jan 6th footage to be blurred, so they cannot be prosecuted.

“Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday that House Republicans are blurring footage from the Capitol attack before releasing it publicly because they don't want Jan. 6 rioters to be charged with crimes.”

I wonder why. Why would Mike Johnson not want people who committed crimes to be prosecuted for those crimes? Why?

Johnson claims he wants transparency, but obviously not.

It's really rather curious. On the one he announces a desire to obstruct justice but, on the other, announced pyblicly that he plans to do so be redacting copies of evidence already seen by the Justice Department.
A lot of the people who have been arrested and charged for crimes related to Jan 6th were found because some member of the public identified them. This is an attempt to prevent that.

Seeing as the DOJ already has the unedited raw footage...
Wonder what the real reason for the blurring is?

From what I understand (from, e.g., CNN) the authorities have unredacted film. Blurring a copy of some picture strikes me as performative nonsense.

This article addresses the situation much better than I did. So, for example, it notes:

The Department of Justice has long had access to the footage and has used it in some of the roughly 1,200 criminal cases against people linked to the riot, when hundreds pushed past police to storm the Capitol.
Johnson’s comment is a remarkable statement of sympathy for supporters of then-President Donald Trump who illegally entered a restricted federal building as part of a violent attack on Congress as it met to certify the Electoral College vote before Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Though prosecutors already have the video, blurring people’s faces could prevent amateur investigators from sending tips to the FBI. Online sleuths have previously used social media and facial recognition software to help the government track down a number of suspects.

This is really funny and I wish I had thought of it.

Beau makes a really good point here. The whole reason the Republicans in the House want to release this footage in the first place is because their base (at least a portion of their base) have bought into the ridiculous conspiracy theory that Jan 6th was orchestrated by the FBI, or the CIA, or the reptilian aliens or something, and they want to see this footage to prove that. Which will only feed into their delusion. And I hope they will blame Mike Johnson for that.

I suspect to side with MAGA at all levels. Johnson is another MAGA who doesn't realize he is creating his own fall in politics. He is one of man gambling on Trump getting the nomonation, and then winning the EC to become president until he dies.

He may be oblivious to reality given his many absurd and false religious beliefs. He's another republican given the chance to rise to the office, but failing at ethics.

The article explicitly states that the people being compensated were protestors who were subject to excessive force, and that "rioters" were excluded from the payout:

"People arrested on other charges, such as arson or property destruction, will be excluded from the settlement, which still requires approval by U.S. District Court Judge Colleen McMahon."

Did you not bother to read your own link, or were you being deliberately dishonest when you claimed rioters were paid?

Omg! Pepper spray and being corraled is regarded as excessive force now.

Yes. Yes, actually. Pepper spraying, kettling and using batons against peaceful protesters is very, very much considered excessive force under US law.

So, you're not going to acknowledge that what you said was false and just continue to accuse peaceful protesters who were victims of excessive police force of being "rioters"?

Cool.

Not a fan of the right to protest, I take it.

And yet here you are, insisting that these victims of excessive police violence MUST have done something to deserve it. Ever the authoritarian.

Do you believe peaceful protesters subject to excessive police force should be compensated, yes or no?
