This is just a question out of curiosity as im currently watching the tv series 3%, which made we wonder what people would think about such system were it actually real.

So to quickly explain the scenario so people understand what the question is about, its like this:

"The world have gone to hell and resources are low so most people live under extremely poor conditions, no food, poor cloth, bad houses, no real doctors etc. However an island exists where 3% of people can go each year by going through a series of tests, this tests is made for everyone that have turned 20 that year. If they pass they will go to the Island and everything is provided for them, good houses, food, all is free, best healthcare, technologically it's a paradise etc. If you fail you will not have another chance and you will have to go back to the bad life. Just want to make it clear, we are not talking eternal life, just a extremely good life.

Now here is the catch, of those that passes all the test and is allowed on the island is only allow to if they accept to be sterilized, so it's only for the person that passes the test. So you have to leave family, kids and so forth behind if you choose to go. And you can't send them stuff etc."

So the question im asking, is not whether you would choose to go or not, obviously you can answer that as well if you want. But whether you believe such system to be fair taking into account that there is not enough to go around?

Is it fair? No, but life is not fair anyway. Just a different type of unfairness.

Is it fair? yes, if you accept the conditions. But I would never go as the conditions wouldn't meet my "fair and equitable" standards. :)

Hmm

I hope this is a very large island, 3% per year adds up to a lot of people after just a few years

I'd rather take my chances elsewhere, sounds way too crowded for my tastes

As far as a " fair test/s "...for me to vote I'd have to know what kind of tests and do we get to study material beforehand or not

It is a TV series and not everything in it makes sense, also I think one has to assume that a lot of people have died etc.

if you didn't have a family you'd hate to leave, what's the downside?

Well you would be sterilized, if you chose to go there, if you wouldn't like to have children and no family/friends you cared about, the choice should be easy. The reason you get sterilized, according to the tv serie, is so everyone have a chance to pass the test and go there if they choose to. So it's not like you go there and create a happy little family. :)

Why? It have nothing to do with religion, it's a tv show which is basically to choose the 3% "worthy" people that are good enough to make it to the island, and everyone is eager to get there, because it is suppose to give them a better life.

No, as a Baha'i, i do not think such a system would be fair because it favors a small group and leaves everyone else in the lurch.

I would have a hard time deciding if I would go.

I don't do that here either, so what's the difference?
Well the difference is, that you might get accepted, but your friends, family etc. might not. Each of you would have to take a seperate test at the age of 20 and it is a one time deal. So it not like you can try again at 21 and so.

I know it sounds stupid, it's just how it is in the tv show. :)

I have no more family except my husband and a brother I never see and I have no personal friends except on forums... Will there be computers on the island?

There are days I would not mind leaving the husband behind ;), but then I might be sorry later.
Oops, I forgot about the cats, I could NEVER leave them behind.

What TV show is that, I might try to find it. My husband loves sci-fi.
