Favorite book quotes

The cake is a lie
I was reading a thread, and one of my favorite quotes from a book by the talented Mrs. Mercedes Lackey popped into my head...

On homosexuality:

"How then, 'unnatural'? Usual, no; and not desirable for the species, else it would die out for lack of offspring. But not unnatural. The beasts of the field are as innocent as man can never be, who has the knowledge of good and evil and the choice between, and they do not cast out of their ranks the shay'a'chern*."

*Shay'a'chern = word for 'homosexual' in Tayledras-speak

I really, really love this quote. I have it bookmarked, and I've actually re-read it so often there's a large crease in the spine from where I've opened it so many times.

Do you have any quotes from books that you really love? Or am I just strange with my Lackey-obsession? :D

I'll have to think about that. I remember quotes quite often...except when the question comes up. It's kind of like Huajiro's post on heros. I like heroes. They mean a good deal to me, but when I read that, they all slipped my mind. The same goes for quotes. I like quotes (as evidenced by a few posts on this list lol), but I don't often remember them when callled on...

the bridge across forever,p.126:

"I don't know yet, A couple of them are saying I'm not too sure this planet is home. Do you ever have the feeling you're a tourist on earth? You'll be walking down the street and suddenly it's like a moving postcard around you? Here's how the people live here, in big house-shaped boxes to keep off 'rain' and 'snow,' holes cut in the sides so they can see out. They move around in smaller boxes, painted different colors, with sheels on the corners. They need this box-culture because each person thinks of herself and himself as locked in a box called a 'body,' arms and legs, fingers to move pencils and tools, languages because they've forgotten how to communicate, eyes because they've forgotten how to see. Odd little planet. Wish you were here. Home soon. Has that ever happened to you?"

"But nevermind! Brother thy tail hangs down behind!" From the Cry of the Bandalog (The Jungle Book) by Rudyard Kipling. I just know he was describing Republicans! :D

People are stupid. People can be made to believe any lie because they want to believe it is true, or because they are afraid that it is true.
I love it.

"From rest and sleep, which but thy picture be,
Much pleasure, then from thee much more must flow,"

John Donne, Death be not Proud.

It is true that sleep is most enjoyable. It would follow then that Death would be immensely more.
