I ****ing love trains

Does anyone here have a favourite type of train?

I like freight trains the best

Especially the British Rail Class 60 locomotive

They used to go past my house in the early 1990s hauling coal when I was but a lad

I like them because it looks like they have a funny expression

I always loved the Hiawatha.

I don't know much about trains in that sense, but my favourite train company to travel with is LNER.

Has to be steam - and living in London then, we used them quite a bit to go on holidays in the 1950s, so double or triple-headers (two or three locomotives) was usually the norm to pull long lines of carriages. As a kid I was also into train spotting, so often going to mainline terminus stations in London or train sheds like the nice turntable shed (can't remember where this was) - which was of course frowned upon by the railway workers who tried to keep us out or catch us. o_O

The worst was getting stuff blown into one's eyes if looking out of the window and too close to the engines. :frowning: The best perhaps was when the old line was still in use between London and Manchester (the slow and winding one that went through Derbyshire), and where much of this went through some of the nicest scenery.

Edit: And the mention of a cogwheel railway has brought memories of the one going inside the Eiger - which is a worthwhile trip and nice but the view from the window was nil due to cloud when we went on it. The Snowdon railway is also worth a trip.

I confess, I feel a certain nostalgia for the older West-Germany Intercity models. The ones from the 1980s. (Some research shows that those would be the BM235 model.) They had these 6-seat "Abteil", like a little private room. And one would either meet and get to know random strangers in those, or if traveling with a group or family you could take over the whole room for yourself.
And it was possible to pull out the seats, not just for a slight decline like today that barely lets you rest, but pull them almost entirely flat. You could pull out all 6 seats and convert the Abteil into one big couch. I loved that.

I never thought about it much before, but I guess the train that Casey Jones drove was pretty memorable.

Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
Trouble ahead, you know, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind

Have you ever heard of the NYC Train Bandit Eddi? It's not too late!

Secret Chief

Very strong language
That is so cool, I wish my life would have worked out differently and that I'd have become a train driver
Are you near enough to one of the reopened train lines run by volunteers? That might be cool for you, if not as a driver. (There's two near me :) )

I'm partial to Shay logging trains.
(My pix won't show in posts today.
So you get a video instead.)
