So it's basically a cross between a telephone, a scanner, and a printer?
Kinda. The document is scanned into a fax machine at one end and is converted to digital data, and it is transmitted to another fax machine through telephone lines, and printed on that machine.

This is nice to see. It reminds me of the good ol’ days when I was growing up. :)

I used to watch the Late Show with David Letterman. He once mentioned some random guy who gave him the finger every time the guy saw Letterman. Then, he joked that the guy even faxed him the finger. There was then a very brief scene of Letterman checking his fax machine and receiving the finger via fax. Lol.

I've never used one of those

When I first encountered them, we called them "telecopiers," since they were just like copy machines, except it went over telephone lines and printed out a copy on another machine. Image quality was usually not so great, but it was useful when documents had to be sent quickly. At some point, they started calling them "facsimile" machines, and then shortened to "fax."

It didn't have the same chemical smell as the old mimeograph ("ditto") machines.

Don’t you just love facts? I figured it be nice Clickbait since a lot of people here get riled up if you use the word facts. Haha. I since renamed my thread to what I initially wanted to name it.
