Hi everyone, I'm a new poster here. Im in a Sociology class and my professor wants us to find the female name for God. I've been looking everywhere and can not find anything. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this? Thanks for the help in advance.

Hi jds,

Welcome to the forum!

Unusual question; although we have had threads in which it was suggested that God might be female. I see no real point in giving God any name other than "God".

hey
i love sociology, its amazing!!!!

by definition, "god" is a title, not a name

like we would give the queen the title of "queen", we give god the title of "god"

as far as i am aware, YahWeh (or yhwh) is God's name

god is supposed to be genderless, and in the original hebrew "god" was not appointed with a gender, God was neutral. However in english, we have not got such a word to imply this, so because we are (or used to mainly be) a patriarchal society, we appointed God as a he, as a farther.

It really depends on whether you are looking for a name for any god, or if the Judeo-Christian God was what they were looking for. Sophia is sometimes seen as an aspect of the latter.

If you're wanting female names for god from a different tradition, I'd be happy to list some. There are only a couple thousand. ;)

well, i disagree with God being "farther" in terms of a gender

in terms of relationship with God, it is similar to that of a relationship between a farther and a sun, but i don't think you can take that to mean God is male

so by the same terms, i would disagree with God being called a "mother" to define him in terms of gender, but to say his love for us is like that of a mothers is fine

does that makes sense?

I had a quick look on google ;) the only thind I could find was some cult calling the female side of god Sophia, but it goes on to say that theres not eveidence. Ill keep looking for you. http://www.goodnewsmag.org/library/articles/cannon-ma94.htm

Sophia is the Gnostic God who protects us from the god of the Israelites.

I think your professor is just messing with you. God is formless/shapeless/unknowable, so therefore God is neither Male nor female. Male and Female are necessary components of Reproduction, and seeing as God can just create at will... ;)

Which religion? There are plenty, if not countless female godesses. Just use any "female" name. Heck, use your wife or girlfriend's name.

Hehee, there are many that call the female side of god Sophia that are not cultists. (I don't think you meant that they were, but she's a dear diety to my heart, so I enjoy speaking about her.)

Here's one version of her, from Sacred Source.

Early Greek Christians portrayed the feminine face of God as Hagia Sophia, or "Holy Female Wisdom." It was believed that Sophia's spirit entered Mary to conceive Jesus and, as a dove, entered Jesus at his baptism. She gave voice to the apostles at Pentecost.
Sophia is seen as wisdom personified. The term "philosopher" is derived from 'philo' (love) and 'soph," usually referring to Sophia. Hence, it means "lover of wisdom."

There's also Persephone, or "Kore" ("Maiden"), Kwan-Yin, White Buffallo Calf Woman, Cerridwen and Bastet (both the forum members who are goddesses and the goddesses themselves!), Freya, Oshun, and others.

To add to Cadero's wonderful suggestions: Charity and Love.

Heck, the godess can name themselves anything they like, so Angellous can be a powerful goddess!! Muwhahahaha!!

Let me think of an appropriate sacrifice.

What if God is a gender-confused transvestite and "her" name is Tommy one day and Twila the next? :shout

True, and iv'e only just noticed that when some one says God, I always assume the Christian God unless they say otherwise, just wondering if anyone else does that?

Did your teacher give you anything more specific than "the famale name for God?"
I can think of a few, including Diane, Gaia, Isis, Aphrodite, Athena, and many more. Just using a mythology encyclopedia for Greek/Roman and Egyptian Gods alone will give you a rather long list.
Three Goddesses I associate with are Inana, Ereshkagal, and Morrigan.
