Fifth grader told to remove Hooters mask in school

"Hooters" is US slang for breasts in some instances. It's also the name of a restaurant that is famous for having attractive women in tight shirts and short shorts as waitresses: Hooters - Wikipedia

There's nothing "adult only" about it. They don't wear anything you couldn't see on the street.

There is(or was?) a similar chain of restaurants called Chi-Chi. That's Mexican slang for boobs.

Ya gotta love this country!

I can't. Trying to divulge further into the mindset of school administrators might result in adverse effects on one's own mental health.
I think schools do stuff like this just to keep themselves out of trouble (i.e. avoiding calls from other parents, etc.) but it ends up backfiring.

5th grader told to remove Hooters face mask in class

Is a Hooters mask offensive? I recall there was a big hullaballoo when the restaurant chain first opened, but it seems to have died down in recent years. Either it gained more acceptance, or most people felt it wasn't really worth fighting about. I haven't seen much picketing or protesting over it in recent years, and it appears to remain in business even as other restaurants are going belly up.
It would be interesting to see what it says in the school document on dress code standards. From the picture, all it says is the restaurant name, so no images that could be dicey.

EVERY form and expression of commercial advertising grotesquely offensive, in my opinion. And all the more so when it's been pasted on some innocent kiddie's face by a greedy corporation with the tacit approval his woefully ignorant parents. I, personally, think the parents ought to be fined for letting their kid go to school with corporate advertising on his face. Or anywhere on his body. But then I think all commercial advertising should be banned, categorically, and forever. And relegated to "find it" catalogues available only by request, on line or in paper version. And nothing more.

It makes me wonder how they deal with gang colors now?

I can see it now. Uniform masking. Like the parochial route. Everybody looks like everybody else. No expression of individuality allowed.

When I was in school, t-shirts weren't usually allowed. But sometimes they were, "casual day".
Even then, advertising wasn't allowed. At first it was just alcohol advertising that wasn't, like a Budweiser T. But kids kept pushing the envelope, the way kids do, and eventually it was no advertising at all.

The school administrators were trying to keep the atmosphere at school focused on education. That's their job.

the bigger concern when I was in high school (mid 70s) was girls in tight and/or mostly-see-through blouses and tee shirts and girls wearing tube tops or halters. It didn't seem like they cared about what the boys were wearing.

I believe Satan lives on Madison Ave.*

What other industry is built upon lying for money?
Tom

*Madison Avenue is a street in New York. It used to be dominated by advertising agencies, and became short hand for unscrupulous advertising.

Personally, I'm all for uniforms in public schools. No cliques, classism, or controversies.

You would have to be pretty shallow if the only way you could express yourself was superficially. Besides, most kids "express their individuality" by chasing whatever fad, trend, brand, etc. is considered popular.

Did you deliberately avoid making a pun about the others going "tits" up? :) Perhaps the reason Hooters has survived, is because sex makes mediocre food sell more easily?

From a schools perspective, they could make it simpler than targeting the boobs-oriented restaurant. Don't allow clothing articles that advertise businesses, such a t-shirts or masks sporting company logos and such. You can't wear that crap in most workplaces, so make the same rule for public schools. That should dry those hooters' eyes that look like nipples right up. :)

I'm not sure why some are being so harsh on this kid and his family because they like Hooters and the kid wore it on his mask. We're not allowed to like things anymore? None of your clothing has branding on it?

Now you know why I'm so vitriolic against the nanny state.
