Films are getting out of hand with sexual content?

The Hangover

Marie and I went to see the above film last night. I have to admit that it was most enjoyable and incredibly funny; what took that "good" feeling out of the experience is that the film was classified as "O.K" for 15 year olds.

Frankly, the gratuitously soft porn content in the film made me wonder what we are doing to our children. I am not really a prude, but I caught myself thinking......where is society going with this? - the film would have been just as funny without some of the scenes which were focused mainly on rather lewd content.

Any thoughts ? Am I a dinosaur ?

The movie was about a bachelor party and it's aftermath. Wouldn't most people expect gratuitous soft porn content and even be upset if it were absent? It seems to me that the two go together and would be hard to separate. Also, I consider 15 year olds capable of dealing with sexual situations on film and being adults about it.

As to your question on films in general, maybe so, but for this specific film I doubt it. I can't say for sure because I haven't seen it yet.

I haven't seen The Hangover yet, but speaking generally, I don't think we've reached the pinnacle of gratuitous nudity and violence in film that we reached in the mid-80s.

I think these sorts of things go through cycles. Personally, though, I'm usually less concerned with sex in films than violence.

Personally, I think the sooner we shed the ideal that sex and nakedness is something to be hidden, the better.

I have a problem with the classification of films full stop....I have seen 12As that I wouldnt want my younger brother of 11 seeing, yet I have seen 18s that would be OK being a 15. I also know of 15s that I am happy for my brother to watch.

I do find it hilarious how the sexual age of consent is 16 (in UK anyway), yet we are happy to show them films of quite full scale sex scenes to those of 15. I havent seen hangover so cant comment on that particular film. Given the story line of them film, I am guessing sex would have to play a role...to what extent is another matter.

I came out of the reader thinking it was basically a porn movie....

Why is nudity such a bad thing? Violence is more prevalent in most movies, yet it is the baring of a body that brings consternation.
I have no problem with my kids seeing a naked body in film, however, when this is accompanied by gratuitous violence, I want to cover their eyes.

Sex in movies is horrible. Why do they think it's alright to portray such a grotesque and disturbing activity which so few human beings will ever engage in?

Yeah..Its violence and sex no matter what movie you watch these days.Thats how they "get ya"!

I think maybe if we have more violence and sex in our real lives ..it would all even out.So when the kids saw the movie it would be mild compared to what they experience in the real world.

In the UK its a 15 and I wouldnt class a 15year old as an adult??

Whats the equivalent UK classification for R? I dont understand american ratings...
There's no direct equivalent. In the US, "R" means that viewers under 17 have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Here it's apparently "14A", which means that viewers under 14 have to be accompanied by an adult.

Sort of on this topic, I watched This Film is Not Yet Rated. It's a documentary about the movie rating system in the US. As it turns out, movies down there are rated in secret by middle-aged card-carrying (between the knees, most likely) Republican women, and while they have very liberal views on explicit, graphic violence, they tend to slap an "R" on anything that suggests women can have orgasms, or that some people are gay. It's quite difficult for film-makers to challenge their decisions, which have the power to make or break a movie. It's a pretty good flick. I recommend it.

So, michel, by the fact it's rated for 15 year olds, I can only assume that you don't live in the US. I agree with the people who have said sex in films is less troubling than violence. The only problem I have with sex in films is that it's usually such an unrealistic depiction. Where are the bumping foreheads? The skinned knees? The patch of leg the shaver didn't quite catch? And why does everybody suddenly seem to be in a committed, life-long relationship (or if not, then dead) the morning after? Nobody in the movies ever has sex with their friends, just for fun. I think it's psychologically damaging, especially for young women. But that's just my opinion as a fun-loving, independent-minded heathen who has been known to have sex for fun rather than as a trade-off for lifelong codependency.

That's where ratings come in :p

Anyway, what's the big deal with sex being more on display? Because people think that it's damaging to kids? Is it any more damaging than all the blood and gore that's out there?

What do YOU think is more traumatizing to a child? Watching someone ripped in half or a couple having sex?

Personally, I'd think it's the former. Sex is something that most people will eventually do. Murder, on the other hand, few people do.
