Finding God.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, feel free to move to the appropriate one if necessary.

I have decided I want to find God in my life. I have always believed, but I haven't lived the most religious lifestyle. I am currently in college and have experienced pretty much everything there is. I like to party and hang out with my friends. Just about 0% of my friends are religious. I am not a bad person by any means; I do not attend church or any religious groups.

Tonight I had a discussion with a friend and I realized I need to find what is important in my life and stop with all the nonsense. I need help getting started because I have no idea where to start. I don't know anyone at any churches around here and am not the type of person to go somewhere alone where I know no one.

Anyone have any suggestions of where I should start?

Blessings to you !
There is more to being a real Christian than just a decision of denomination and translation of the Bible. -
It realy begins with the need for change, a change of heart, mindset and way of life. You as a person can only do so much and it is usualy not enough to make this changes permanent.
We, as Christians believe that Jesus is alive and still changes lives everyday.
It all begins there. You can talk to him, aloud or in your mind -and ask Him to set you on the right path. If you want to become a Christian ask yourself :why?
If your answer is : to change,to become new, to find a relationship with God.
Then Just ask Jesus to start the change: He is the key,the Door to God, the Path we must thread on. The Bible states that all that call on Him(Jesus) shall be saved. And somewhere else it states that doing this you receive the power to be called a child of God.
Don't get strangelled in all the church and denomination nets -it is a soulkiller. It starts with a meeting with Jesus and building a relationship with God.

Friend John,

Sure then the next question would be what do you understand by the *god* concept ?

My first suggestion would be for you to understand that you are still young, and it is a great folly to claim that you have 'experienced pretty much everything there is', in fact im sure there would be quite a few adults in your nation who would be insulted by a college kid proclaiming that.
my second advice, is not to think that religion necessarily has the key to God and secondly I would moderate my need 'to party' if you want to pursue what some of the greatest religions claim to be the most important and serious phenomenon in the whole of existence.

Why don't you try reading some scripture, read several religious scriptures, and find what calls to your heart? There are SO many ways to "find God" if you're willing. Nothing wrong with being Christian, but if you really do feel the need to connect with something, and make it a lifelong decision, you should be sure that it's the one that suits you best. Good luck!

For scripture I suggest:

The NIV Bible
Torah
Gnostic Bible
Tao Te Ching
Writings of Confucius
The Koran
The Pali Cannon
and various pagan writings - easily available on the net. This should get you started.

All I can say is study a wide array of religions and philosophies from an objective, analytical standpoint, and reject any notions that run contrary to reason and compassion, because if there is any god at all those are the two attributes that will lead you to him.

I'm an old guy with one foot in the grave.
Been where you are.

I suggest you continue as is.

Your desire to know God will take hold when it should.

For now...avoid being lead around.
Find your time.... in your own time.

hmm.. I suggest that U start with the thinking of yourself.. being a human.. and also thinking about this world that U can see with your eyes.. the sun, the moon, the stars, the sky, the clouds, the day and night, the sleep and wakefullness.. till U accept and have faith on the existance of GOD..

Then, I suggest U to experience things by yourself.. and to find the Knowledge of GOD. U may start by reading books, Bible, Qoran, Torah or whatever other people may write to U.. but, bear in mind that, the books or other readings are not the true knowledge.. it is the imprint of the knowledge or other people's knowledge.

The true knowledge is what U feel / had felt.. had experience through time.. in every single moment of your life.. because your deeds are in accordance with your intentions.. and the intentions is not coming out within us just like that, the same way as the feel of love, sad, etc..

So, start the journey to find GOD.. from the closest thing to U.. your soul.. where are U inside your own body.. ?.. what U can find is .. flesh n blood.. but U know that U are inside your body..?...good luck my fren!!

Greetings!

I would urge you to investigate as many of the various religions as you can, and then come to an informed decision free of prejudice ("pre-judging") about which path is best for you!

I'll also point out that IOV NO ONE else has the right to make this decision for you, or to interfere with your right to search and question!

Best regards, and I wish you good hunting! :)

If you set out to find god, you will not find god. Instead, the desire to find god shapes what you will find, so that, if you desire to find god, you will find the sort of god that you desire. But that will not be god.

If you want to connect with God the best thing to do is pray, words are not important in a scripted prayer type way, simply find a quiet relaxed hour or two , sit in a comfy chair or lay on your back, eyes closed and think of God, think of questions to him, problems in your life etc, monitor the thoughts that enter your mind at random, some of those thoughts are God speaking back.
Just give it a try, its free, its relaxing and you have nothing to lose.
All the best evidence for God is subjective rather than objective, and the subjective evidence is so easy to come across, all you need to do is talk to God.
If you feel after trying that nothing happened, please do try again, unless you are gifted in some unheard of way then you will not hear a booming voice, God will speak subtle in the toughts of your mind, the secret is in learning to listen.

Sounds to me like you have been indifferent for a long time. My guess is that friends don't care much for speculative discussion. You think there is more than life than partying, passing time in an en joyous yet empty way. What you want is perspective, to put your existence under some form of explanation. Unfortunately, it is an infinite search, but that should keep you busy. Well...

1.) Always speculate, observe, analysis, question.
2.) Study arts and sciences, especially literature. Discover the implications of all phenomenon.

I would read "The Fall" by Albert Camus.

Thats a *perfect* understanding!

If you want to "find" god, whatever the term means to you, then all you need do is still your thoughts and touch that which already exists deep within you. There is something wonderful behind your eyes that you simply cannot find in any book. The nice part is that you don't need to listen to what anyone tells you. Just listen to the whispers from eternity that bathe your every thought.

Just as a door lock has only one key that will fit it and unlock the door, just as one set of numbers will open a combination lock (any other multitude of numbers will not), so likewise there is only one God, who is the Creator of the heavens and earth. Proverbs 3:19, 20 says that "Jehovah himself in wisdom founded the earth. He solidly fixed the heavens in discernment. By his knowledge the watery deeps themselves were split apart, and the cloudy skies keep dripping down light rain."

Finding God, the true God Jehovah, does require effort on our part. Jesus said that "road" to "life", life everlasting, is "cramped," with few finding it.(Matt 7:14) On the other hand, the "road" to nowhere, as Jesus said, to destruction, is "broad and spacious", whereby anything goes, whether it be any sort of teaching or ideology or religious arrangement.(Matt 7:13)

However, just as the combination lock has only one set of numbers and in precise sequence, so likewise there is only one God who has a set arrangement or organization in place that pleases him. Now is the time to "search for Jehovah, you people, while he may be found. Call to him while he proves to be near."(Isa 55:6)
