A Florida school district is pulling nearly 2,000 books from its shelves — including some dictionaries and encyclopedias — to make sure they abide by a new state law.

Why it matters: The state law, which prohibits schools from carrying books that describe sexual content, comes as Florida continues to get pushback over its titles banned in prisons and classrooms.

Religion and conservatism are both terrified by knowledge amongst those who ought to be led and governed by their betters. This is no longer even moderately surprising.

What is the political leaning of Florida?

The state is dominated by Republicans on the state level, as Democrats have not held the governorship or either house of the legislature since 1999.

Freedom of speech was once one of the highest and most protected rights in the US. What happened?

It's still protected.
But all rights are continually under assault by
various factions, eg, Dems against gun rights,
Pubs against bodily autonomy.
We must be ever vigilant.

Lots of Reps and Cons have taken that to mean freedom for me not for the thee, freedom to force my religion on you, free to be an *******, free to have false opinions treated as evidemce based facts, free to do whatever you want and ignore the effects on others and especially to be free of consequences.

Well, when they get re-elected it is free of consequences for them.
That's the consequence of tribalism: if your leaders can't do anything wrong, you are stuck with ****ty leaders.
(That also holds for the dems. Bone Spurs vs Sleepy Joe? That's the best you could come up with?

It's not a problem of freedom of speech, here.
It's about sex. Books about sex.

Whereas in Germany there are the farmers protesting, and the EU is talking about very serious matters. Inflation, energy supply, the war.

Reminds me of another regime who burned books 80 years ago.
Yes. Although of course you don't need to go back that long. Or indeed reference another country.

It's about sex. Sex, sex, sex. That's what the US politics is all about.
Do they speak about anything else?
No. They speak of LGBTs, how they have sex, and whether Clinton or Trump had sex.

If the farmers were Germany were having sex, it would have made the news in the U.S.

It's a positive thing...it means citizens don't have the same problems as Europe.
:)
We will celebrate when this awful war in Ukraine terminates. It will be international holiday.

WOW!

Just like the Democrats!

Seriously though it's actually a two party problem. Not just Republicans playing the nanny state.
