"Florida school asks parents for permission to have book by an African American author read to students"

WTF is going on?
I'd file that under "malicious compliance".
The organizer of that reading was just as keen to ask for the signatures as the parents were to give them. If everything goes according to the plan, the ensuing discussion will lead to them never having to ask for permission slips again.

I agree that permission slips shouldn't have been needed for this, and the note written was extremely poorly worded and possibly racist, but I hope you actually read the article and understand that the permission was not asked because the guest was African American--the same policy exists for all guest speakers. Obviously this is an issue but I feel like the headline as well as your post here are misleading click bait intended to rile people up.

What was misleading about my post, and why did it rile you up?

It didn't rile me up, it just seemed to imply that the permission slip was sent because the guest speaker was African American when that's not actually the case. It seems to me like this was an isolated case of a poorly written letter to parents.

Sarcasm warning - Well you know, it's quite likely that them African American folk folk, not that I have anything against them, are trying to turn all them poor little kids into African Americans. It's a dangerous slope.
