Folders on your computer

Jaymes

The cake is a lie
How messy is your harddrive? Do you save everything to one folder and end up having to search for a good 10 minutes before you can find the file you want, or is your hard drive nice and organized with different folders for pictures, music, text files, and the like? Does the way you organize your files on your computer reflect how messy/neat you are in real life?

A few minutes ago I got fed up with my generic 'download' folder and made several new folders and did a lot of sorting... it's not hard, but I'll drag my heels before actually getting around to it and usually have a couple of hundred files to sort through.

Im not to specific about my files, until I get over 100 files in them, then I start to organize by catagories, such as music, pictues, and videos. And when it becomes neccesary, I use sub catagory folder, such as naming folders by author.
If I'm to lazy to organize things I downloaded from my sister's computer (she has cable) when there put on mine, I just make a folder called stuff, the more stuff, lots of stuff, and so on.

I have a very well organized computer. I have folders within folders within folders. If it's on my computer, I know exactly where it is. Sometimes my 'favorites' folder gets a little messy since I'm a little over-eager to add pages to it, but other than that, it's very organized. I even have time set aside every Sunday to organize it.

I guess I'm the same way in most other aspects of my life. I like everything to have its place. I also love cleaning and organizing, which I do a lot because I'm also a major pack rat. :D

oops! Sounds a bit like me; I am worse though; I am obsessive about a tidy computer! Everything has to be 'My way' - and I tidy up before every shutdown, clear cookies, and temp files, history - the lot, use Norton windoctor to find mistakes in the registry - I even have a registry optimising tool! - and I optimize.

I suppose it does have it's values though; the performance of the computer never lessens. I become quite irritable whren my wife asks me to fix something on her laptop, and there are all those short cuts on the desktop - for some absurd reason, I hate that - then I look at the hard drive, and find all those folders not removed after an undelete! I have to count slowly to ten, so as not to let it get to me.........:biglaugh:

Considering the amount of files I actually have, and the fact that some of them would remain best hidden from my parents, I have a vastly unorganized hard drive.

My computer hard disk is not too bad can find most things with a few clicks.
I use the desk top as the way in to most files.these basic shortcuts I keep on the left of the screen. I rarely have to go and search c drive.
Files I am working with are on the right side.
Suits my way of working. Michel would hate it.

My files are organised to an extent... but my music folder has seen so many changes lately that there are some double-copies of files, some empty folders and some files that do not have proper names as they were taken from other languages which my pc doesn't support. But usually i find what i'm looking for.
My documents are very well organised, but there are some random and useless files scattered about that i don't bother deleting.
My favourites... well, that's a very murky area i choose to steer clear of.

I was about to say the exact same thing about my computer, but you said it for me! Thanks! I would get too stressed-out if I couldn't find what I needed when I needed it.

Regarding folders and organization...the one thing that drives me NUTZ is a cluttered desktop. I have 7 items on the iMac desktop including the hard drive, trash, and desktop printer icon while the laptop has 6. I try to keep everything else kind as neatly organized as possible. Organize my favorites into folders, too. Now, if I could organize my desk as nearly as file on the 'puter...:D

Heh, I used to have elaborate mazes of folders in fear of my parents finding a file. It was pretty useless for me to do though considering my parents never come into my room.

I have 6 systems, network storage, a lifetime of data backups/archives ect... Over 2PB of backup, not including what I have on hard disks. Do you think I could remember where I put everything? Heck yeah my stuff is orginized.

If you dont want your parents to find files, archive them, put them in the printers folder and change the extension name. Make it hp.dl_ or something. Smart parents can just search the drive for *.jpg,*.avi,*.png,*.gif,*.mpg,*.mpeg,*.wma,*.mp3,*.wmv ect.

I have several hidden folders for that reason. My parents don't know about them, and wouldn't know how to unhid them if they did.

I'd like to think that my computer is the one place where everything is neat and spiffy.

I got a folder for everything and subfolders for everything else - music, photos, games, school work, and downloads, just to name a couple.

A little from column A, a little from column B.

Sort of...I can let some things get pretty messy around here before it will drive me nuts enough to have a proper cleaning spree. Other things I'm totally anal about though...it depends.

My wooden desk tops are a mess. But I find most everything that I look for. My hard disks are fairly logically arranged, the C: keeping all the programs and the E: with its 33 folders handling all created data. For example, my 2 GB of religious files are spread out on 5 E folders. (C: & E: currently @ some 200 GB each).

At 62, I don't have to worry about mother (88). Her hips keep her from getting to my (3rd) floor (I don't store very much that she couldn't stand anyway) , and me and my sisters haven't so far been able to make her more computer-wise than using hers as a typewriter. Despite all our nagging, she still refuses to have an Internet connection.

Everything is on my server's hard drive and easily accesible by simple search. 74 major groupings that are divided even further into additional files.
