Footprints in the Sand

Not really sure where to put this but it is a poem that was shown to me by a friend which I thought was lovely:-

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.”

My older sister has a little thing in her room with that poem-thing written on it. She doesn't believe in god, but she likes the poem.

I've always loved that, Dream Angel. :)

A lovely sentiment. If only it were true.

I've heard the last line substituted for many other lines, some of which were much funnier than others.

I don't think I will EVER understand why believers feel they NEED to be carried. Are they so weak so spineless so dependent so lacking in will that they can only survive tough times by holding on to some fairy-godfather's invisible hand?

A truly pitiful existence.:(

Yes, but then have you been rendered so blind and soulless by your own self-righteousness that you really can't understand the struggles and weaknesses of others? Seems to me that would also be a truly pitiful existence.

It must really be something to never need to be carried. You should really feel fortunate. But feeling fortunate, you don't need to belittle people who are different from you in this way. Remember that Barbra Streisand song, "People, people who need people are the luckiest people in the world." Well, in my opinion, "People, people who need God are the luckiest people in the world." You don't need people or God. As far as I'm concerned, you're the one who is to be pitied.

But you don't know what difficulties OmarKhayyam has been through in his life. Perhaps he needed God, and he only got himself instead.

A matter of perspective, I suppose.;)

Perhaps a few lines from Cyrano will offer you a new perspective?

Shall I labor night and day
To build a reputation on one song,
And never write another? Shall I find
True genius only among Geniuses,
Palpitate over little paragraphs,
And struggle to insinuate my name
In the columns of the Mercury?
No thank you! Calculate, scheme, be afraid,
Love more to make a visit than a poem,
Seek introductions, favors, influences?-
No thank you! No, I thank you! And again
I thank you!- But...

To sing, to laugh, to dream,
To walk in my own way and be alone,
Free, with an eye to see things as they are,
A voice that means manhood- to **** my hat
Where I choose- At a word, a Yes, a No,
To fight- or write. To travel any road
Under the sun, under the stars, nor doubt
If fame or fortune lie beyond the bourne-
never to make a line I have not heard
In my own heart; yet, with all modesty
To say: "My soul, be satisfied with flowers,
With fruit, with weeds even; but gather them
In the one garden you may call your own."
So, when I win some triumph, by some chance,
Render no share to Caesar- in a word,
I am to proud to be a parasite,
And if my nature wants the germ that grows
Towering to heaven like the mountain pine,
Or like the oak, sheltering multitudes-
I stand, not high it may be- But alone!

:clap

Take the beauty out the poem why dont you....

My Mum is just like you, thinks people who accepts help of others are weak and dependent and spineless.

Each to their own but just because you dont WANT (note different to need) to be carried doesnt mean others who do are any weaker than you. If anything they are stronger for accepting it. It is a difficult thing to be able to trust in someone else - especially some "fairy-godfather's invisible hand" as you say.

Problem comes when people with your line of thought do NEED the help and DONT WANT it - they are usually stuck!

That's sort of short-sighted, I think. We are born weak and in need of the help of others. We eventually grow to become strong and to become the helpers of others who are in need, and then finally we become feeble and needy once again before we pass on.

We spend much of our lives in need of the help of others, as human beings. As have you. And you will likely find yourself in that position again before you die. It's part of the human condition to be needy, and to be needed; to need help and to give it to others in turn. We are an interdependent species.

I don't know why this is so, but I do know that freedom from it is an illusion. It's easy to forget this in the middle of life, when no one we love is in immediate need of our help, and we have conveniently forgotten our own needy past. But life is a circle, and we will find ourselves needed and in need again soon enough.

Neediness teaches us generosity, and compassion, and love, just as our crimes against each other teach us to empathize and to forgive, and to see ourselves in each other.

We are not free of each other, that's just an illusion, and thankfully so.

A friend carries you or helps you in need. Have you never had the need to lean on someone?. DO you have any friends that you can confide in, bounce an idea off of?. If not that is a pitiful existence!!

But the parasite is never alone. And is always needy.
