Foreign Music

Azakel

Liebe ist für alle da
Now depending on where you are in the world would make what is foreign to you. Since I live in the U.S. to me(at lest personally any band not from here is foreign). But I have been listening to music from all over the world and loving it, though I don't know what there saying, it doesn't matter. I will share first, then I what every one else to share, and though you may not like what I or some one else posts no saying, well they suck, it's you opinion and it's okay, but play nice.

Ok here I go:

Band-Byte(Egyptian): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lMidtctHqw
Daler Mehndi(India): http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...347&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

All most sleep time, those are the only one I can't think of right now.

Would music from England or Australia be foreign?
That depends on where you live. If you don't live in England or Australia, than yes, that would be foreign.

I have a lot of anime soundtracks, so yes, I listen to foreign music a lot. :D

The first song I had up be Nightwish, if any one was wondering what the Native American is saying it: "Mitakuye oyasin lel ohinni e yelo" which means, in Lakota, "All of my people are all still here".
At the end of the song:
"Hanhepi iyuho mi ihanbla ohinni yelo

O sunkmanitutankapi hena,
sunkawakanpi watogha hena,

oblaye t'ankapi oihankesni hena

T'at'epi kin asni kiyasni he
akatanhanpi iwankal

Oblaye t'anka kin
osicesni mitakuyepi òn

Makoce kin wakan
WakanTanka kin òn

Miwicala ohinni - Hanhepi iyuha
kici - Anpetu iyuha kici halo

Mi yececa hehaka kin yelo, na
ni yececa sunkmanitutankapi

kin ka mikaga wowasaka isom

Uncipi tuweni nitaku keyas ta k'u

Unwakupi e'cela e wiconi
wanji unmakainapi ta halo

Anpetu waste e wan olowan
le talowan winyan ta yelo

Unwanagi pi lel e nita it'okab o'ta ye

Untapi it'okab o'ta

Na e kte ena òn hanska ohakap
ni itansni a'u nita ihanke halo"

Translation:
"I still dream every night
Of them wolves, them mustangs, those endless prairies
The restless winds over mountaintops
The unspoilt frontier of my kith n`kin
The hallowed land of the Great Spirit
I still believe
In every night
In every day
I am like the caribou
And you like the wolves that make me stronger
We never owed you anything
Our only debt is one life for our Mother
It was a good day to chant this song
For Her

Our spirit was here long before you
Long before us
And long will it be after your pride brings you to your end"

Well, in my household there's always plenty of 'foreign' music - mostly in Romanian (which is strictly speaking foreign to me even though I'm now pretty fluent) and everything ranging from Byzantine chant to folk music to pop. I can't claim to like it all (some female Romanian folk singers sound like someone's trying to strangle a cat, many male ones warble way too much and there's far too much 'Hai didi didi didi dii' type lyrics) but some is good and, having a European wife and a pretty mixed background myself, Romanian isn't the only language - we'll give pretty much anything a go if it sounds good (just not French - please, not French).

Here's an example of Romanian folk music (a famous song by the famous Maria Tanase), just in case anyone's interested. She wasn't one of the singers I referred to as sounding like a strangled cat and I quite like some of her stuff, though I prefer Sofia Vicoveanca. Unfortunately as she's still recording it's much harder to find free links to her music. Anyway, here's the link:

I like a lot of styles of music but since you are asking, I would say that I enjoy more traditional styles when it comes to "foreign" music, I am a big fan of Middle Eastern styles of music, I couldn't quote you any artists names offhand but I like the style. I especially enjoy the siren songs (which made it's way into 80's early 90's goth music" there is something about a woman singing off key in certain octaves which mesmerizes me, beauty and art combined with echoes of the old world. Traditional Japanese music is also a big one for me, I am in the process of learning the shakuhachi, it's a very simple instrument yet very complex ( I don't play very good now). I have played the Native American flute for years and figured "it's a flute, how hard can it be?" someone(s) is/are laughing somewhere.

I'm of East Indian descent but I live in the Caribbean. My ancestors came from India. The Indians here love Indian music and Indian movies. Yes, I love to hear Daler Mehndi sing!

This is one of my favourites - a song called "Kajra Re". The gal in it is Aishwarya Rai - a former Miss World.

The video was silly, but I really liked the music and dancing! Thanks.

I'm an Asha Bhosle fan ... from 1 Giant Leap.

(OK, I got all the links fixed ... sorry about that ... I don't know why they got so messed up.)

Here's one of my favorites: Angekique Kidjo - "Agolo". She's originally from Benin, Africa, but entered the world music scene through the french afropop movement. Here is another of her songs: "Malaika". Also, check out her version of Jimi Hendrick's "Voodoo Child".

I'm also a fan of Baaba Maal, a musician from Senigal. Here he is live in London's Albert Hall, doing "Hamady Boiro" and, "Cherie". And a fun video, "Yela".

Baaba Maal and Angelique Kidjo are true 'world musician' because their audiences really do span the globe, and so do their concert tours.

Here's a new favorite of mine: Tinariwen - "Africa Calling". And Tinariwen - "Chet Bhogasa".

And my all-time favorites of 'world music' are Archie Roach and his wife Ruby Hunter. Unfortunately, they still are not well known outside of Australia and they are not well represented on YouTube, yet.

Archie Roach - "Took The Children Away"

Archie Roach - "Jamu Dreamin"

Archie and Sarah do an old Paul Kelly tune ...

I loved that Indian music, Hema. :)

When I was in Brazil I got to experience a lot of live maracatu drumming in the streets. It's an engaging and addictive drum/dance/song sequence that originated with the African slave population in Brazil. You can't listen to it and not feel like dancing.

The best sample I could find was actually filmed in New York, but it's exactly like what I experienced in Brazil:

I like the Belgian band Lords of Acid. I can't post any links to videos because I'd probably get banned.
