So I have been...whatever I am for about a week. It was almost like someone flipped a switch. My roommate was a Mormon and a few months ago she came to the conclusion that Joseph Smith was a false prophet and about two weeks after that that this whole 'God' thing might be false as well. I heard her say that she was not interested in trying any other faiths because "not one of them knows what the truth really is."

That's where it began for me. I heard that and said to myself, "Of course. OF COURSE, THEY DON'T." It sounds so simple, but I suddenly couldn't justify how I knew my religion was true and Islam wasn't. Or Buddhism. Or anything else. I found myself watching a video of John Shelby Spong saying Hell is an invention of the church meant to control people. Again, "OF COURSE." And I felt stupid for having been a sucker for so long. Everything I've learned and discovered in the last several days has all seemed so simple and "of course"-ish now that I am looking at the world through a logical lens rather than a religious one. Amazing, huh?:eek:

I feel I am still a ways away from being an atheist, but I have finally realized that Christianity and the Bible do not hold the answers. A 'duh' response from most of your hear already, but this is a ground shaking epiphany for me. I hope this forum can help me find some answers and meet people that are in the same learning group as me :)

Believe it or not, but I think that most of us go through something like this at one point or another.

Some people come out with their faith strengthened. Some come out without it. And others come out with something totally different.

No matter what, examining your faith (or lack thereof) critically is a good thing.

And welcome to RF!

Epiphanies are wonderful!

Being logical is great. I´m pretty logical and skeptical even though I have a spiritual belief. I think it´s good to take everything with a big grain of salt.

Wow. Thanks for the welcome everyone! At times I find myself retracting and saying 'what if I am wrong?' but I can't live my life that way. I am only about two weeks into this so who knows what will come out the other end.

Welcome! And congratulations! It's a wonderful thing to get out there and re-examine your beliefs. Don't be afraid, learn as much as you can, question everything. When the right path FOR YOU comes along, you will know it. Good luck!

If you are wrong, God will just smile and say:"No worries, I understand it's hard to get it, you are very busy on earth, it's easy to get distracted."

So true. I always say that there are going to be a heck of a lot of atheists who one day wake up in heaven and say, "Cool; I'm glad to be wrong."

Jesus said that you shall know them by their fruits. He never said that you shall know them by their beliefs. :)

Bonjour! Yes, we all go through a time of examining. Sometimes faith is lost, sometimes stronger and sometimes changed, but it's a very healthy thing, I think. It's the time when we realize who we really are and what we really believe.
I went though that, starting as a Catholic, then switched between being Agnostic, Dianic Wiccan and eventually a pantheistic Pagan-Luciferian. Whatever you believe, I wish you the best of luck and it's nice to meet you!
