Is it normal?
It is not.
Because in my country ancient churches are restored and preserved by a specific Ministry, the Ministry of Culture.
Not only churches, even ancient or historical buildings.

It depends on the cost, architectural and cultural significance.

Not to far from us was a derelict abbey. Its been rebuilt using traditional methods and materials originally used to build it.

A little further away is a 4th century Roman church, it is still in use and costs a fortune on continuous maintenance.

I wonder how that reflects christian values, fixing "gods"
house instead of helping the poor

They are building mosques instead. Muslims are having more babies I guess.

Actually there are over 100,000 churches in france.
And 2 200 mosques.500 synagogue's and 300 Buddhist temples.

A further 200 mosques are planned

The thing is muslims are paying for their mosques to be built. Christianity expects the state to pay.

Well, some European countries have official religions, so it makes sense. It actually is a benefit though, because it reduces proselytizing since the churches get money from the government, so few people actually go to church. Thanks for the info.

I once managed an apartment building that
was converted from a church. All of a sudden,
the income wasn't tax free.
